Is this too much seepage on my hoist?

Most new cylinders do not have that style of packing. They use a wiper type seal and have to be replaced. That means the hoist has to be removed. My experience has not been the best with rebuilds, usually new is the better alternative.
Here's a REAL leak story. When I was pulling a a 24ft. dump trailer with a Mack R model, hauling salt from Milwaukee to Madison, Wis. (about 75 miles), the trailer had the oil tank on the front of the trailer, with the hoses going through the deck plate on the truck to the pump. I had to make a real tight turn at the salt pile, and unknown to me, one of the hoses broke the connection on the pump. When I got to Madison, I engaged the pump, pulled the up/down lever, nothing happened. I got out, and saw the whole underside of the trailer and the tailgate were soaked with oil. (I wondered why no one was following me close) Since I was at the county shop, I borrowed a pipe wrench, and a pipe nipple, fixed the connection, put about 30 gallons of oil (that the boss had to pay for) and got the load off. I got chewed out for that by the boss, who said, I should have come back (65 miles) and had it fixed at our shop. Never even thanked me for fixing the truck. That's gratitude for ya'. I quit shortly after.
used to pull a 32ft Fruehauf dump with a 4300 barnyard hotrod ( international for you young one) blew the hose one day with it fully in the air. squirted oil straight to the back of cab for what seamed like an eternity! just by luck I was in side with the door closed. that truck weeped oil from the rivet's in the cab for years. that weeping on the seals isn't bad. it could clear up when warm weather comes back.

1johnb You are so right. Theoretically a cylinder should be no problem to rebuild. An honest hydraulic shop will tell the customer to go buy a new cylinder.

Negative, local tugging a 40' frameless. Some sporadic regional after I work my way up into seniority. They have a handfull of new KW's and Pete's with coffin sleepers for this work. Local company been around for 40+ yrs? hauling anything that will fit in the bed is the motto on the website.

Inteview and driving test went well. The boss spent 3hrs with me. Offer on the table for mid to late march when things pick up like the asphalt plants open, concrete plants ramp up etc. After setting up interview yesterday morning the boss sent " my " Sterling down to scrub a truck for full detail in preparation for my driving test. The interview sure rattled some cages at my current employer, my phone was blowing up today from low tier management wanting a sit down. I told them what my offer was from Redbank and they made a counter. Nothing is set in stone yet. It's comfortable where i am with no DAC and casual atmosphere. If I flop my truck I would get a glutius Maximus chewing, my list of loads for the next day in a straight truck and off I go. Redbank I am sure reports DAC with the size of their company. Didn't get around to asking though.

All n all it was a good day.

pulling and dumping that 40' frameless will be wild as opposed to what you currently pull. be prepared for LOTS of lunging forward as you drop the dump. also the pucker factor is certainly there as you go up but with as much experience as you now have, you'll be fine.

nice to know that your talents/skills are desired. best of luck in whatever decision that you make.
