For those that know the Smith System you will know this is one of the keys....but not just for when you are in the truck but when you are OUT of the truck...walking in the lot.
I know this is common sense to the majority of you reading this but thing that triggered this thought occurred today as I was getting my day started. I had just finished fueling and was getting ready to pull forward as I did my left/right/left look around and put it into gear I noticed a gentleman....head down....hoodie on blocking his peripheral view....walking toward the store in front of the pumps. HE NEVER ONCE LOOKED UP as he walked toward, in front of and then past my truck. Had I been distracted or not paying attention myself it could have been an unfortunate situation.
Anyway. Carry on with your regularly scheduled program.
Make sure they see you

Our boss just got us all lime green glow in the dark safety type jackets to wear, so we can be seen better.
G.Anthony Thanks this. -
I agree op but the pedestrians always have the right of way.You have to really watch certain places.I've seen many truckers walking thru lots and right infront of semi not caring if he gets hit or not.

some of these guys could really dent the truck
I'm quite a fashion statement with my high visability green sweatshirt
and orange seatbelt
wife packs the sweatshirt every trip since the guy got run over and killed at Loves Tulare Ca -
In the days before safety vests (not too long ago) drivers had enough common sense to watch whats going on around them We could go on for hours on the stupid things people do in a parking lot or a whs. lot including but not limited to a moron who walks between a dock and a building while your backing into said building. Priceless

When I was a kid, it was "Look both ways before crossing the street." Now it's "Pedestrians always have the right-of-way." Unfortunately, people my age and older are the most likely to ignore my truck, thinking their lawyer will fix everything if I hit them. "Had the right-of-way" looks real good on a tombstone.

Let me ask this: who among us hasn't been distracted, by load, shedule, shipper/consignee, truck problems, home matters, health issues, lots of things pile up on a driver. Therefore, who among us hasn't found him/herself wandering across a street or parking lot thinking hard about this kind of stuff, and not paying attention? Trusting those present to have a care, to help us out just a little? I do, although I try not to, knowing that looking up at a semi isn't good for my health. And for those who think that distracted wanderers are old, or the good ol' days were better? I call you on that garbage. The past is gone, forget about it. Age has little or nothing to do with being distracted. It's about individuals and living on earth more than anything else. Last, we all know this stuff happens, let us take care of each other as best we can.

In many ways the good old days were better, in some ways not so much. What we have today is no courtesy , no concern for your fellow man , and an attitude that you know it all. There is your garbage your garbage. I don't see how you can comment on the good old days when you didn't experience it. No air ride, no ps ,no ac, no radio, maybe a cb but you couldn't hear it. Some of the downfalls of the profession, but it was better than standing at the fuel desk behind a guy who smells like a wet goat and is covered in dog hair, or flys through the fuel island at 20 mph. when was the last time there were no seats in the diner and a driver offered you a seat at his table ? How many of these guys would be out here if they had to start in "the good old days" like us old guys ? The changes that have taken place in this industry over the past 20 years or so saddens me and many other of us "old guys" who loved tis industry and took pride in our jobs.
