Okay, so here's the deal...almost done with cdl school. Not sure if I should go with Schneider intermodal( pay will be about 700 net, from what the recruiter told me) or this other small company (10 trucks, dry van) that supposedly will pay me somewhere around 1500 a week. The owner tells me that his drivers are averaging about 3400 miles per week. He also mentioned that I would have to start my own corporation for tax purposes. I would have to go northeast on a regular basis. What do you all think?

My advice is to go to a big company, get some experience under your belt and then call that small company.

:yes2557: I started w/Schneider and then moved on. I kicked myself in the nuts for a year, but knowing what I do now
I would do the same thing! GOOD LUCK

Agree with this. If he's making you start a "corporation" it means he wants to pay you on a 1099 as a contractor instead of as an employee. This is illegal and screws you as the driver. Who knows what other shady things he will do. I like smaller companies but that one is a bad idea.

$1500 a week sounds great! UNTIL you have to pay your own health insurance and all the federal state and local taxes that need to be filed quarterly. So will likely need a tax preparer or accountant. Don't forget you will likely have no unemployment insurance or disability insurance. Always and forever stay away from 1099 companies unless you have such a terrible driving record that you cannot get ANY other job.

Yes you should work for a smaller company rather than a large one. But you absolutely should not work for this small company nor any other that wants to pay you illegally. If they're going to pay you illegally, they're likely to expect you to do other things illegally.

I'd look for higher pay and less miles. 3400 miles/week is brutal. Even 3000/week is very hard work. And NE on top of that? Yer gonna croak from stress.
Take a safe easy $700-800/week job for at least six months. That is reasonable starting pay. Take time to talk to lot's of drivers and fully consider options. It is very important decision so don't be in a hurry.

More and more I realize that this forum is filled only with blue collar guys who just know how to go to work, get a paycheck and have no business sence or knowledge whatsoever.
Go work for 1099 for a year to gain experience, get a smart accountant (not H&R block or some crap like that) and at the end of the year you will net much more than working for a mega, even after buying your own healthinsurance. After a year go work for a better carrier or buy your own truck.
