I would say that hauling freight for $1.24 a mile with fuel as high as it now is indicates he isn't very good at making "good" decisions at any time. If he would have said NO to cheap-### freight, he wouldn't have ended up in San Diego broke and hungry and spent his "savings" on a blown tire. He would have made more money working locally at the neighborhood bean-fields.....AND slept in his own bed at night.
I sold my truck 6 years ago, but I NEVER hauled anything that paid LESS than 1.65mile.....fuel was 1/3 of what it is today. I knew what I needed to be paid to make money, and I never once hauled "break-even" freight.

Because if you don't know what it takes to make money, you have no business in business. Get out of the way and let the smart people make a living.

Occasionally we are in complete agreement on an issue.
If someone's "savings" amount to the cost of one tire- or even a full set- that person has no business attempting to be an independent trucker.
It strikes me as amazingly stupid for a guy to hit the road with much less than ten grand or so in available cash.
Maybe this guy should consider a position as a company driver if, that is if his driving record is not as in pisspoor condition as his junk tractor apparently is.
