They can use tax records. You did file a return on your self employment income, yes?
-
Yes I did.

Just put their phone number on the app and your bosses name. There was a couple companies that closed and I have never been questioned on them.Companies are manly looking for a work history and if there is gaps between employment you need to fill that in.

I think I would be screwed right now if I were applying for one of the big "Cookie Cutter" companies. When the housing bubble happened in 2008, I was laid off as a estimator. I played golf & went fishing for a year before I seriously looked for employment. Not sure how that would work out on a trucking application.....lol
Recruiter: Mr. John, you don't show any employment from 2008-2009. Could you document what you were doing?
Me: Sure...... I was hauling some huge Striper fish outta the Chesapeake Bay, and trying to lower my handicap from 6 to a 3.skyviper73 Thanks this. -
I have almost a 10 year hole where a company closed, ower died, and that is what I put. Never been questioned about that.
RetiredUSN Thanks this. -
Some companies may want notarized letters from several people that know you, but this is usually business people, not family or friends. Best to ask what they need/require.
As far as tax records go, that only shows an income, not actual time on a job. Sure you can show a tax return of $50,000 for the year, but that could be only 6 months of actual work, when that job probably paid over $100,000.
You have to verify all time off work (laid off), or out on worker's comp, etc, etc. These are called gaps in employment.RetiredUSN Thanks this. -
Never produce tax records, they are meaningless. Just put down the company name and number and let them deal with finding out the info.
G.Anthony and Steel Maverick Thank this. -
This is so true, and why someone previously said to do so, confounded me to no end, but I let it go, rather than to respond to it.
All the potential employer "has to do" is make an attempt to contact former employers. They have to show in the files, attempts were made. I cannot say for sure, but a "set number" of attempts are supposed to be made, before they give up, and make note of it.
I have a former employer, that simply REFUSES to give any kind of reference for me and any other former employee. Any future employer I applied at, I told them that XYZ Trucking WILL NOT cooperate.
They find out later, I ain't lying. But they make note of it in the file that they made "several attempts". -
accidental double posting, my bad.
