My truck started making a rattling sound. It's coming from the front near the engine fan. I only hear it when it's idling. I've heard other trucks making that same rattling sound before. Anybody give me an idea what it is?

What make of engine, mileage? Could be fan clutch, worn bushings on accessory gear, bull gear, blown/worn/loose front motor mounts, etc, etc...

Does it change at all when the air compressor is pumping?
-
^ what they said.
Have you turned motor off and tried to see if the fan is wobbily? Mine was when the fan clutch was shot.
Also does the noise come and go where it could be your air compressor when it cycles? -
keep it simple check the fan clutch first, lots of luck

What about the idler pulley/tensioner?
-
The sound does come and go. I dumped my air while I was idling to make the air compressor kick on. The sound was not there. Right now my truck sounds normal. The rattling is not there. But I'm sure it will return.

I had a similar noise on a '12 ISX in a W900 two years ago. One of the belt idler tension pulleys had to be replaced (under warranty of course). Could be your same issue.?.?.?
