I just hired a new driver had him scheduled to leave wednesday morning but insurance took longer than expected so I'll have to reschedule him for Monday what do you guys think it's a fair compensation for his time? Please keep in mind I'm a 1 truck owner.

Companies pay around $80 a day for orientation plus meals. If he is not away from home where he is home everyday and evening to where he has not been mput out.....i would say I would be very happy if someone compensated me 40 or 50 a day. Hope that helps. Just my opinion.

If he or she bused or took a flight in, I would pay for his or her hotel and meals.I wouldn't pay wages.It's not your fault insurance was delayed.It's not his or her fault that they showed up on the start date with no work.Upgrade the hotel from Motel Six to the Hilton.Upgrade the meal from burgers to steak and lobster.

to be honest, I'd LIKE to agree with the two above me.. but as a business owner, I can't.
If he's a local, you can shrug and say "sorry, things out of my control are still pending". It happens. A week delay is .. well, not acceptable, but commonplace.
If he's from out of town, you can put him up in the Best Western and give him meals - but if you didn't promise that from the outset, he has no right to expect it. Or, if he's not willing, you can ship him home and get a different driver.
Keep in mind, he is NOT an employee yet. You are under no obligation to care for him.
However, leaving him on the curb, so to speak, can have bad repercussions down the road for you. If he's really peeved, and has a wide circle of friends, he can add a blemish to your reputation. Sure that might happen any way - but you need to be aware of the possibility when you make your decision.
You'll have to walk that fine line - but it's YOUR line to walk. -

What you have to do, and should do are probably two different things. Am assuming you want to keep this driver. If he's home, and you can afford it, then 40-50 a day should be more than enough, and sometime in the future when you ask a favor of him, he'd be more willing to do it. If he travelled in, what's cheaper, paying for a round trip home, or reasonable motel (in a decent neighborhood) with meals. Most companies have a per diem price. You can find the average price of motels in your area, offer that to him in cash, and offer him 30 a day for meals.

His main question was " what do you guys think it's a fair compensation for his time? " so apparently he all ready made up his mind it was right to pay the man. That is why I did not get into wether he should or not just how much would be fair. Yes it does not have to do anything.....but....how would you want to be treated if you was in that position, what would you expect? Too many people only do what they have to do instead of whats right to do. Im a firm beleaver in WHAT GOES AROUND ..COMES AROUND. As was said previously you do the guy right right now and he may bend over backwards for you later on. " goes along with the main complaint about trucking companies treating you like a number instead of a person. My advice to the poster...compensate the man something. It will come back to you , whether its hard work from an employee that feels like you treat him right or just the satisfaction that you did something that you should be proud of.

if the guy is local to you... $50 a day should keep him happy.
If he's from out of town and reported when you told him to: $50 a day plus a decent room (motel 6) plus a meal allotment $20.
Not germaine since you know you owe something but more in response to lurch's screw him attitude.
I suppose it's possible to get away with screwing the guy but frankly I think he could take you to small claims court and absolutely win.
He's out time effort and money on your word. He wouldn't have been there unless you said to be and you owe the guy.
how much you owe could be argued but it would have to atleast equal minimum wage.
Besides??? give the guy the can of polish and put him to work getting settled in. Lots nicer than him stealing fuel from you later... Karma has a way of catching up to you. -
thank you guys for all of your great input. This is the deal, as soon as I found out about the insurance problem I contacted the driver to rescheduled from Wednesday to Monday. I already change his airplane ticket to Monday so he is at home. From your comments I plan to ask him what he thinks it's a fair compensation for his time and I won't pay over $50 a day
