Just had a guy yesterday with the same exact size truck get quoted at $7,000.00 a year. He's a full blown rookie, zero experience, clean driving record. What I've found over the years is, it's what most guys are saying to insurance companies while getting their quotes thats inflating the rate on them. For instance, we're an OTR LTL Carrier, We're not running expedited loads, we're not into oil fields, or hauling hazmat loads. We make that known up front. And if a insurance agent we're talking to uses the term Hotshot we stop them cold and tell them thats not what we are. I have no clue what you plan on hauling but figured this little bit of info might just help you?
I think I read in here somewhere that you're based out of TX? If thats the case I have a few phone numbers of Texas based insurance companies I can give you. Let me know if you want them.
Advice for new hotshot owner

99.9% of those 48,000 lb loads are not going to work for you. LOL You'll be waisting a lot of your time, not to mention making some Brokers angry at you. If you want to do that, do it after you've called on everything within your weight range.
When you see a load posted with out any weight listed, look in the comment box on the posting for any details. If there is no comments reflecting the weight go ahead and call on those loads. Sometimes you'll get lucky with them.Last edited: Mar 5, 2015
Lite bug Thanks this. -
What I founded out to is don't call the insurance company direct. I Call progressive & they wanted 2800 or 2600 down then called an agent 1600 down. Make sure you tell them it's a pick up & not Semi. Make plenty off calls.
Some of these places are crazy with there quotes -
Not sure if your a real motor carrier working off the load boards but almost all loads are listed as 48 feet and 48,000 pounds. The brokers do not take the time to enter the correct info. They cut and paste. I would say it's the exact opposite of what you say. 99% of what I've found is that every load listed as 48,000 is not even close.

With regards to sleeper and off duty. I said in a previous post that I sent an email to the FMCSA and got the exact response I expected. Here is the reply I got. In short, you cannot log off duty while in the sleeper. If an officer wants to make an issue of it they can give you a logbook violation.
In answering your question, it is really quite simple: when someone is in the sleeper berth, it needs to be documented as sleeper berth time. If one stays in a hotel, that is considered off duty time. If someone is ever required to stay with a load while they are not driving, they are considered to be on duty, not driving. I hope that has helped answer your questions. Thank you. -
What is killing me now is the insurance, liability alone in 8,300 for 1 million , .., best quote so far is 14,200 , everyone else is close to 20k , when they ask me what I'm carrying I tell them it's a variety of loads ..., please someone get me phone numbers of a affordable insurance, putting down 2,890.00 and a payment of 1,290.00 a month is the best I can get now. Thank you everyone for so much help full info I really mean it.
