I have spent 2 years driving over the road before spending the last 8 in the Marines. I am getting out next month and I have an offer to work for a local company hauling Gas. The deal is that you get paid hourly from the time you clock in until you clock out starting at $15 an hour and receiving a .50 an hour increase every 6 months. You work 5 days a week 10-15 hour days and you get paid time and a half after 40. The employer does a matching contributions on a 401k and pays for family health insurance in full. I think this is a great deal and I am not being required to do refresher training. Does this sound like a good deal for someone who hasnt touched a truck in 8 years.

I believe it does sound like a good deal.

If the benefits are paid in full and its a good family health plan its not to bad, probably $50k/yr with some overtime. I think its the best you'll do being out of a truck for 8 years without having to go with one of the undesirables for a bit. Just out of curiosity are they teamsters?

$50k? My rough estimate is $35k/year before taxes/401k.
-
Dupree Logistics pays like that. You just want to make sure you get paid overtime to make it an even better deal. So I guess it depends on how many loads you get per day.
I'm always amazed why some drivers don't take advantage of the 401K plans.
I used to get on my buddy's case everyday about it. He kept telling me he couldn't afford it.
I told him you can't afford NOT to.
Just make an enquiry as to whether the company will offer you a ROTH 401K plan.
and with that, the money they contribute will be tax free. In other words you're getting free money when they add to your account. The health ins plan sounds like a sweet deal too.
good luck. -
I was figuring in 20 hours overtime a week at time and a half

Okay, yeah, your estimate is closer than mine then. He'd be making $44k/year. That seems low to me but the cost of living is pretty high where I'm at.
-
My dad works for them and is making close to 60k but he has been driving 25+ years. It is not a union position. My cost of living is low, I saved enough in the Marines that i paid cash for my property.

Why are you getting out of the corps were you I would at least go into the reserves.

I am done with them. I have done my 8 years honorably, they got tiers and it is time to get mine.
