With both of the LTL companies that I interviewed with (SEFL and ABF)...I had to follow-up with the terminal managers about my online application. Both said "Oh, yeah...I saw your application...just haven't gotten around to calling you. Can you come in for an interview on Monday?" (it was a Friday)

The terminal managers have a lot on their plate. They run the terminal and perform the HR function. It's not like with a OTR company that has dedicated recruiter, HR, etc. personnel. If you're just hanging out and waiting for one of the terminal managers to call you...you might be in for a long wait.

I'm a l/h driver for Con-way. Currently I'm at $23.00/hr & .52.9 cpm, averaging 1500-1800 miles per week. Average gross pay $1650-1800/wk. I earn my money by pounding the dock wherever I run, working my 14 everyday. Some don't like the dock, I like the money! (the dock's not bad, driving a fast go cart with forks :biggrin_25524:)

At Con-way, i's all about seniority, especially with l/h. Top pay is $25.41 & .60.1 cpm, after 3 years. The l/h runs are given out based on a bid process, which is done by seniority. Our trucks are assigned based on the length of run, newest to oldest, long to short runs.

City p/d, I did for a while. One post here talked about being proficient at backing.......VERY TRUE! Be good at it, the city will eat you up, four wheelers don't yield or care about the big truck backing in off the street, you better hit it the first time!

City p/d at Con-way is all hourly, start at $21.(something) top at $25.41 after (3) years. Overtime daily after 8 hours. Runs in the city are bid by seniority but it's the START TIME your bidding, no the particular pedal. Trucks, based on seniority, newest usually goes with the senior guy etc.. (however, if the truck that is usually ran on days is not back from the night l/h run, it's whatever is available) Line haul at Con-way rules the roost!

City work is 2x the work for 80% of the l/h money (IMO). For example, I have grossed $9700 in the first 5 weeks of 2015 (I'm not at top pay, I'm in the middle), and we're slow. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the description XFM2013. I just filled out an app for the Con-Way terminal in Carlstadt, NJ. I know most of these LTL companies operate in a similar way - line haul runs between terminals, mostly at night, and P&D goes around bumping docks, mostly during they day, and everything is by seniority. Let me ask you this - if you finish your run, can you be done for the day? I know they want a lot of hours, and I have no problem putting in OT and making money, but sometimes it's nice to be able to go home at a normal time because you have plans or something. I guess what I'm asking is, what is the minimum work week the P&D guys put in?

Isn't a 12 hour day just a typical day for a trucker? I don't know that I've ever had a good paying truck driving job where I didn't work 12-14 hour days. It's par for the course.

Do you have to break pallets down? Just wondering. After 18 years of driving truck I don't think my back can break pallets down, but I can pull pallets off the trailers.
