Slow down to a speed you'd be driving in the low range (10-15 mph) BEFORE you try to downshift into the low range.

Does it happend when not in motion just hitting the splitter down. If it does it is the synchronizer

That's the new politically correct term for... "it grinds like a mudda!"
"semi" retired Thanks this. -
Are Synchronizers expensive to get repaired and I'll try it sitting still

Hi homesick, I didn't mean to make fun of your "regional" dialect. I just never heard grinding called scratching before. I believe the syncronizer is in the back half of the trans., so it may not even have to be removed. Do you move the hi-low lever while still in gear (preselecting) or in neutral. I've had transmissions grind like that when preselecting, and it seemed better when in neutral.

Rockwell sync is ~500 parts and maybe 700-1000 labor. Tranny does not need to come down. Maybe a day and its done.
-
If you cant down-shift with two or three fingers you are not synchronizing correctly, or there might be something wrong in the tranny.
The 5th to 6th or back, it could be the transmission real easy, so I ain't saying its your fault.
I once drove a high mileage rig back to its buyer, and no matter what I did, up-shifting or down in 5 to 6, that M-F would not go into gear, without slamming it cause the tranny was already busted up. To say he bought a POS is an understatement.
