am retiring from career job later this year. am wondering if trucking is reasonable follow-on work for my particular situation. to assess, would like to join for ~ week run(s) - preferably over Memorial Day week (based on vacation time).
would cover all personal costs, including insurance rider if necessary - not looking cause one to incur costs. will communicate directly if interested between now & then to ensure am not a killer, thief, religious zealot, or Craig's List creep. simply want to see what a week, several thousand miles, and a trucker's life is like in order to make my own decision. seems a reasonable thing to do prior to spending time, $$, and effort for CDL school or signing on for "free" schooling w/ a one-year hitch requirement.
am based near Baltimore (Annapolis). am also willing drive reasonable distance to catch a ride elsewhere providing have a place to park POV. have means to get back home if need be.
tried this on another "trucking bulletin board," but only received opinionated responses from self-appointed BB bullies who seem to inhabit nearly any forum. only looking for those open to this concept. not really looking for other's opinions, want to be able to form my own from real-world experience (realizing that it's only a week).
thanks in advance,
Tom

They don't allow posts like this, no ride along posts.

Not interested in stirring the pot but why? Two adults should be able to make a self determination on their own. But maybe in this day in age there's just too many liability issues.

My situation is similar to the Op's. Looking to make a career change this coming May.
Seems like a reasonable request before a investing a lot of time & $$. Any suggestions I'd be all ears. I'm located about 30 miles north about of Detroit.

Liability is one of the issues.
Another issue is that many of us go into shipper/receivers who do not allow passengers who are not CDL holders or employees of the driver's company (insurance stuff). Which means if you do find someone who can give you the opportunity you may end up spending an unfortunate amount of time either at a truck stop waiting for a driver to load/unload (which can take 10 hours or more at some places), or sitting at the guard shack waiting for just as many hours. Not a safe situation for anybody. Plus the Rider's Insurance is fairly expensive for some, and there are drivers (and companies) that don't even carry the rider on their policy (thus the No Passenger Policy). -
Makes perfect sense...thanks for the explanation.
brsims Thanks this. -
2 dogs and no passenger seat. I could stuff you in the side box if you promise to fold my tarps. Sunny days I could strap you to the deck if you like.

I'll take you for a ride along, under 2 condition:
1. you sign ALL waivers, including but not limited to insurance, liability, theft, and dismemberment.
2. you won't take a leak every 2 to 3 hours. -
Well...that leaves me out. I'm 57 with an enlarged prostate.

Then, maybe trucking is not such a good match...mugurpe and CallOfTheWild Thank this.
