So recently my 05 vnl fan clutch stopped working so I located the solenoid then tested it and the volt meter showed me that it was putting out 9 volts when connected straight to the battery, so I manually connected to my batter and switch to at least get home, and turn it on manually just to cool down the engine. My question is what controls the fan clutch solenoid, is it the on the ecu or what might it be to fix this issue, also what type of voltage should it be putting out? I would gladly appreciate if anyone would find a wiring diagram for the fan clutch solenoid. Thanks.

not sure about what volts should be putting out, thats out of my line of expertise. However the ECM tells the solenoid when to turn the fan on however engine temperature sensor tells the ECM when the engine is too hot and the fan needs to turn on. if your fan is not working I would check to make sure you have ever going to the fan clutch and there is not a leak. Easiest way to tell if your fan is working is with the Key off the engine fan should not turn. With the key on and the motor off the engine fan should spin freely.this will help you wrap it is not a fan clutch issue. I hope this helps

    my fan clutch is working
because I hard wiered and selenoid of the fan clutch straight to the battery and it worked fine just like it should except I had to make a switch to the cab and manually turn it on or off. I am thinking that there might be some problem in the ecu or engine temperature sensor.

so my problem is somewhere before the selenoid!

aby by idea how I check if the ecu is giving the selenoid the command?

Do you have a good reading on the dash for the coolant? I would suspect a bad engine temp sensor before an ecm problem.

I have the exact same problem with my Volvo! I gave up trying to figure it out so I did what you did.

    Did you fix it?

I have 9 volts on fan clutch solenoid and I wonder if its normal or it should be getting 12v?

On Volvo 2005 the Engine Ecu is controling the fan clutch for coolant temp, oil temp and intake temp also the VECU have the capability to turn On the fan for A/C and manual fan switch via Data link through Engine Ecu.
Normally the fuse F-61 (depends of the build date of the truck) supply 12 volts one side of the solonoid the other side of the solonoid is control by the engine Ecu, the ECU apply ground on solonoid to keep the fan OFF.
When the ECU turn the fan ON by removing the ground this wire comes positive at approx 9 volts.
If it can help normally with 100 psi in air tank with engine OFF (key ON) the fan clutch can be turn freely by hands, if the fan is disengage with engine OFF and turn ON as soon the engine is running then you have the proof the engine ECU turn the fan ON.
When you say my fan stop work do you means stop to engage or stay engage all the time ?

My fan clutch is engaged all the time , even when solenoid gets 9v and supply the air to the clutch,
I went for a vacation for 3 weeks, everything was ok when I left
Starting to think that something got rusted in side the fan clutch and it doesnt disengage even with supplied air

I had to replace my clutch, they wear out and seize up. Hub bearings were good. I thought it was electrical at first and was messing with the solenoid. But it was just the clutch.
