One other thing OP; not trying to hijack your thread. Get yourself some Carharts, Underarmour thermals, and Mickey Mouse boots. Those boots are #### good you can get them at the Army/Navy store. They run about 110.00 just make sure you have good socks that wick away moisture or you'll freeze. That dock is open air and with the weather we have had layering is no joke.

That's what I thought when I was attending my CDL school. They beat it into peoples heads that "you need to pay your dues" running ######## loads for pennies per mile for a couple years so that you can earn a chance to work a local gig.
That's how I started. I don't really see a problem with it. I got paid well enough working on the dock that it didn't bug me.Shaggy Thanks this. -
Former Great Lakes student myself, welcome to the industry. I run linehaul for Saia out of Columbus. I put in a year OTR before going LTL. I enjoyed the experience of OTR driving, but I'll never go back; you can't beat going home at the end of every day, can't beat the money either. Welcome to the company and good luck.

You should be starting at 19.40/hr. they raised their payscale about a year ago now...
-
City drivers start at 19.40/hr, OT after 45 hours. Pretty sure they top out at 22 something. Linehaul drivers start at .48cpm, top out at .56, plus you receive accessorial pay for drop and hooks, extra drops and delays. Linehaul is where the money is at. Pretty good benefits; only downside is spouse can no longer be covered under your insurance if her (or his) job offers its own insurance, effective last year. Overall, I'm very happy with Saia. I don't plan on leaving any time soon.

I'm Great Lakes Alumni too. I work for a big time major food distributor here in Cleveland no not that company on Greyton Road near I-480 but a big time company based in Grand Rapids Michigan that have white trucks with a big red and yellow strip down the side of the trailer and three really really big letters that you can't miss.
Previous to that I worked straight out of school for a company in Cleveland that distributes the fine family of Miller-Coors products.
