Hi, I just recently obtained my Class A after completing truck driving school.
I'm from Central New Jersey. So here's my situation:
My friend and I both obtained our Class A w/Double,triple, hazmat, tanker. We are planning to apply as OTR Team drivers, possibly tanker.
However at the moment, my friend will not be able to apply immediately. Right now he is working another job to get some income before we hit the road since training pay would not be enough to cover his bills. In the meantime, I would like to get some driving experience (mostly just want to leave my current job) locally temporarily (month or two). Would this option be possible?
Thanks.

I think so. However, many times when a person graduates driving school, they should get a job ASAP. Sometimes, as little as 30 days of no driving job, and an employer may DEMAND someone go back to school and take either a refresher course, or the whole thing all over again. Some companies "allow" up to 60 day, and then go back to school. SO no matter what his situation is, I'd get that truck driving job you both want, NOW.
He's gonna have to suck it up. I could of course say, "he should have been working while in school".
If you get a job first, actually you may like it, and forget teaming.
You can try to apply at driver-leasing companies in your area, or do an online search for driver leasing companies.
Good Luck.pensive Thanks this. -
Best for you to go ahead and start driving tankers now, then when he's ready to hit the road you'll already be trained and making good money. Schneider Bulk will probably put you to work right now; their tanker training is in PA. You can run teams with Schneider Bulk.
If you decide against tankers then go with a company that does West Coast runs. He can join you when he's ready. Here's a few that run West Coast and back:
Pride Transport
Abilene Motor Express
Old Dominion
Southern Refrigerated Transport
Midwest-coast Transport
Don't fool with those temp local jobs right out of CDL school because that could cause you to have to pay for a refresher course to finally go OTR.Last edited: Mar 10, 2015

Post a brief resume/cover letter in the Craigslist Resume category, and give it 30 days or so before declaring it a waste of time.
I posted this: http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/res/4881446059.html , it got only one response, but that response looks good (shadowed a driver over the weekend, going to fuel terminal, delivering to service stations).
I'm not impressed with the listing, but it did work, and that is what the listing was intended to do.pensive Thanks this. -
Most local companies require 6month experience. I think old dominion except recent grads they have training program. As far as waiting on yo friend. It could be possible that your friend would change his mind therefore you might miss out on a perfect window u have right now. Gone get your experience and whenever your friend get ready its possible that the company u choose will let u train him just because you 2 want to team. Food for thought you may not like teaming. Since u say you want to team pick a company that focused on teams like crst and 1st 6 month @covenant. See if u like it as for me I like my space. If I want to get butt a!# naked in my truck I can. If I was team I couldn't do that.

Thanks for your input! I was actually looking into Schneider positions. Originally my friend (well, boyfriend actually) were applying for a team tanker position with Schneider. He obtained his CDL before me (back in Oct '14). I didn't obtain mine until last month. But due to a recent accident last year, this disqualified him from the position.
I'm a bit weary of going OTR solo since I was planning to be in the same truck as my bf.Chinatown Thanks this. -
I am otr and also female trust me I understand your fears. Its like kind of having your guard up. After a while you will get comfortable in your job on the do and don't of a female driver. Like most jobs everyone is not out to see u do well. Or if u walk around on parking lot you might just get asked how much. But its not all bad Especially when u out drive a male driver lol. Otr you have to take care of yourself and make sure u stay safe. But I like being a solo my boyfriend is a o/o with landstar and I work for ptl. I been driving for 4 years and I never worked with him. I have always been solo. But schidner has a list they put drivers on to determine when u get a good truck you have to work up list. Ptl is only company that has consistently put me in new model trucks right now I have 2014 freightlinner. But good luck its not that bad solo.

With that accident on his record; that limits him. missjhawk works for Paschall Truck Lines which is a decent dry van company; they probably would hire both of you for a team operation.
Carolina Cargo will probably hire you both as a team doing California runs. You each will "take home" about $800.00 a week there.
Don't wait too long to start working after graduation or your choices will become even more limited. -
yeah carolina cargo will deff be the way to go and make good money 800-1200 every 5-7 days call their recruiter 803-385-7585
