While everyone knows there are scam artists out there, pan handling and trying to scam the drivers, I am going to tell you about one that is what he claims to be.
I cannot recall the name of the truck stop; it is on the 58 at the Weed Patch Highway exit...
There is a young man there... in his early 20's. He is mentally handicapped, and his family tries to survive on just his father's SSI. His mom takes care of his dad full time (early onset Alzhiemer's) and he just cannot get a regular job.
He spends a great deal of his time at the truck stop. He will wash your windows and mirrors, and do a TOP NOTCH job. He will clean the INSIDE of the windows, if you will allow him to.
My husband will wait for this young man to get there, if he is headed that way. He has since he started driving 6 years ago.
All this young man wants is 2 or 3 dollars. And if you are someone he knows, like my husband, He'll do the windows several times in a week, and you can pay him at the end of the week.
When we had to pick up my husband and daughter in Denver, we stopped there in the Buick, and let him do the windows.
He's not a fake, a pan-handler, or a scam artist. He will NOT take money if he did no work. And he will not waste the money. He takes it home to his mom to pay the bills, and buy food. So if you see him, know that he is real!

I'm just speachless and could cry. Bonnie PLEASE find out exactly the name of the truck stop if you can and me and my merry band of Arkansas bound rednecks will be sure to stop. We'll have plenty of windows to wash, dogs to walk, etc. I'll even pay him a heafty sum to play security guard while we eat and then bring him dinner to boot.
It still just rips me up that we live in such a wealthy nation and we have situations like this......just blows my mind and tugs at my heart strings. I've always gone out of the way to help if I can. I'm not usually big on given cash but will go buy someone dinner or invite them in with me.
I only had to explain the concept of giving once to my girls. We were stopped at a stoplight and a man approached my car and ask for change so I happily handed over a couple dollars........my girls ask why? I said because ya never know what form God comes in.bellarene Thanks this. -
I'm lookin on the map.............do you think that is where the 228 meets the 58 ?
I see a bear mountain ts and a TA
Hey Mr.Bowles ya got a clue where this might be? I know it's in your neck of the woods. -
Next question.....if this young man is disabled then why isn't he also getting SSI ? ? ?

come down here I'll show you that kind of poverty in a mass scale. One of my neighbors is th emother of my uncles housekeeper. She lives in a 10 X 14 portable utility building and she was just diagnosed with a brain tumor. This is common in the rural areas. There is neighborhoods here that if you drive through you'd think you were in 1970 Misissippi. All falling down shacks with large families of black folks living in them. It'll be 100 degrees out and the window are open and they sit around on the porch with wet rags on there heads. These are the "statistics" people hear about dying in them hot days

Yes, animal control, it is Bruce's. Shanny, try as I might, I cannot find a 228 meeting 58... I do find a 223 meeting 58?
I don't know why they denied his SSI, and they may have approved it by now (it's been nearly a year since I was there...) but the last time I was there, he was still working. And one of my friends lives down there, and says he was working last week. -
Sittin here in Bakersfield.........
It is Bruces Truck Stop...........
Next door is Scotsman's Restaraunt..........
Also has one of the few drive thru Subway sandwiches shops I've ever seen........ can't get a big truck through there though!
Weedpatch/Morning Drive is the exit off of 58.......... you can get to it from 99........ it is about 8 miles east of 99........
I'm sure the family gets assistance..... however, for most people there is more month than money....... if the young man is happy doing what he is doing this is probably a good choice for him...... this way his earnings are not taken out of any assistance he might qualify for....
I work with mentally challenged high school students and know many people at Kern Regional Center which is the agency that watches over them once they graduate from high school...... I will check on the young man and get back to you guys....... but I think it would be great if everyone gave him some business...

GuysLady Thanks this. -
God bless this young man! It's nice to see a guy who actually works for what he receives! Next time I roll through Bruce's, I'll help him out. And, for the record, I almost NEVER help those kind of guys, because most of them spend the money on booze or drugs.
animal control Thanks this. -
