    Tommy, that's not hammering wear, that is debris wear, from dirty assembly.

    Also, too lean and detonation aren't terms to be used when talking about diesel. Up to the point of incomplete combustion, a diesel is always lean, in the sense that there is more than enough air for the fuel. The stoichiometric ratios of gas engine don't apply to diesels, as those ratios only determine when you can ignite a mixture with a spark. Diesels are basically always in detonation mode, which means it's always the high temperatures in the combustion chamber that ignite the fuel. The detonation in a gas engine is the fuel mixture igniting before the spark fires, throwing off the timing of the combustion event. In a diesel, there is no fuel to ignite until injection, and that injection controls the timing of combustion.

    Oil Sample reports:

    From this, it looks like they changed the oil at 900 miles, 24,000 miles, and then switched to synthetic at 48,000 miles which they ran until teardown at >100,000 miles. According to TTT, KR & Polaris said everything was pretty normal

    I'd want the bypass filter working from the first start. Why would you NOT want any contaminates removed. I'd also change the oil at 2k miles or so, then again at 15k.

    Pretty large jump on a new motor from 900 to 24,000 miles. I would have done two more oil changes in the middle there. Cheap insurance.

    Got to tell you guys if I was spending $200k on a truck with an engine like this I would expect the engine to be built like my former GT-R, in a clean room with people who know what they are doing, not on the garage floor with Al the mechanic eating his lunch while putting it together.

    My thought was that forcing the oil through traditional oil filter only would get contaminates more effectively on a short mileage basis. Maybe I am mistaken, I'm skeptical of bypass filters too because of the source of the promises on them, and because it's another "spend money to save money" product. $200 every couple months for oil changes does not seem unreasonable to me, and we know if we change oil on schedule we can expect great longevity and oil protection for our engines. There is lots of data there, hundreds of thousands of trucks with 1million plus miles doing it this way. So I don't want to spend money on a secondary system, and be a guinea pig for unproven theories, just to attempt to save $1000/yr. I have to be in the shop for lube anyway, it doesn't save me time. To me, it is high risk with little reward.

    edit - I'm listening to the Rutherford show now. I think he just said don't worry about things like permits, plates, scales, tolls, etc... because it's only pennies per mile. He says it never comes out to more than 5 or 6 cents per mile and is inconsequential. Jesus man, his whole deal is saving tenths of mpg in fuel savings and how every bit counts. Does he even understand that all his fuel savings hoopla is also only pennies per mile ?

    I never paid that close of attention to him before this truck. Thought he was obsessed with fuel savings and hocked a few products to help with that. Now that I've been paying closer attention I'm just dumbfounded.

    I agree with you. KR seems addicted to cutting only the fuel costs. He seems to have run a successful fleet of trucks leased to FedEx, but his obsession with fuel mileage appears to make him lose site of the big picture. It would be easier to gain 20 cents of revenue than save 20 cents in fuel cost. Further, his obsession with slowing down causes him to misstate the lost miles. I have hauled containers from Chicago to Cincinnati. AT the speed limit, or within the range the Indiana state police will let it slide, you can turn a round trip in less than 11 hours of driving. Slow it down to 62, and you can't, which costs 1 round trip a week, or $1,000 in lost revenue.
