After reading all the horror stories about drivers getting screwed and abused by trucking companies in the USA I have come to the conclusion that there must be no employment standards in law in the USA. Notice that you do not read about these horrible things happening to drivers that drive for Canadian trucking companies. It is not that these companies are one bit better than anyone else but that they are forced to behave to a standard that is set by the ministry of labour and any breaking of these labour laws is going to get you in plenty of hot water with the labour investigators. If you showed up at the labour ministry with an unsafe truck and told them that your employer says you must drive this truck the company could be looking at $100,000 or more in fines. If a company screws you out of money that they owe you by contract or agreement and this is taken to the labour board they will be forced to pay you and probably be fined to boot. If they fire you for this they will be looking at the the labour board inspector's smiling face every day for years. It is just not worth it trying to screw your employees here. You will be put out of business. Another thing is workmans compensation. If you hire anybody to do anything in Canada you are required to pay for their workmans compensation. It is not even that expensive depending on the track record and accident rate of the employer. I had a roofing company which is one of the highest risk occupations and it cost me about $6 per $100 of payroll. This means that you are covered no matter what. If you are hurt at work you will be taken care of period. Are there no standards set by the government that employers are bound by law to observe. Or are there standards that are not inforced.

There are laws, the thing is that no one goes to the labor board. They just take it and go on.

Our labor laws are structured to be more protective of companies, not employees. Although they appear quiet the opposite.

All this thanks to the fact that lawyers run our country...not the people.

Canuck, The U.S is so corrupt and so much money passes under the table between officials that these companies get away with it. The main reason drivers dont report anything is they will get burned for it. Others employers will not want to hire them, and they cant just move to Canada. But most american industries are like this. Its a dog eat dog every man for himself mentality. And it sucks. Economy is taken over quality. It reminds me of a bunch of rats in a tub stepping all over each other to keep from drowning. Well, gotta go watch tv and get pumped by commercials and then go to wal-mart and consume.

It's pretty much impossible for any corruption in most of the Canadian ministries especially in inforcement. Almost nothing is done on a local level therefore the local powers that be have nada influence. Also we have a office of the Ombudsman who will look into any alleged misconduct by any government official and cause the government no end of humilation if wrongdoing is uncovered. We also have the RCMP who seem to really dislike crooked pols and just love to bust them whenever they can. Nobody gets a free pass from the mounties and they are not politically beholding to anyone. So it does not matter if you are the Prime Minister or just some lowly school board trusty if your breaking the law they are out to get you.Sure we have corruption but like the case of our last government the mounties are probably going to catch you and really ruin you. The liberals were giving money to some of their friends illegally and got caught. Now some of the formally powerful friends are in jail, lost their businesses and the liberals are out of power. I guess what I am trying to say is that it's too risky to be corrupt here

Nice. Loved the wally world refference.:biggrin_2559: But I must say, AMEN brother! The more I hear about the way Canada runs their country the more I wonder "what went wrong HERE"!! I can't help but think that our own way of doing things(in the government) will be our own downfall. This idea that we as a people are to stupid to live our own lives without the "guidance" of a room full of lawyers and politicians telling us what we can or can't do, is getting a little rediculous. My parents and grandparents tell of a time when men were men and they were responsible for their own actions and took care of their neighbors. I never lived in that time, but I miss it somehow.
