Do you need benefits for you and your child?
Does this small company have those benefits that are affordable?

What's the worst that will happen? As long as you keep your nose clean, you can always go back...

My company isn't mom n pop. Rather, husband n wife. I worked for a mega carrier for the better part of a decade. No comparison in my opinion. Wouldn't go back in a million years!

I love working for a small company. I done the mega carrier thing & will never go back. Home every weekend with my wife & kids while still getting to do what I love. I make more in a single week than I ever could with any mega carrier & my truck runs 78mph. Your not about to hear me complain.

Ask questions. For the most part, the small companies are worlds better than the megas, but there are certain small companies that are worse than any mega I've seen. Straight slum lords on wheels. I knew a driver and his wife that ran team that took a job for a guy that had two trucks. The owners touted themselves as "good Christian people". Not knocking you thumpers, but good Christian people do not go around telling others that they're good Christian people. Anyway, they kept them broke, sent them on the west coast and ran them up and down the coast. The drivers had to borrow money from family to get home.
Saw another one a few years back where these two guys ran team. The owners wife had the fuel micromanaged so tightly that they couldn't idle the truck and make their deliveries. 90 degrees, 2 guys stuck in a truck for the weekend. They got to split $300.
If I were you, I'd keep some money stashed away just in case I needed to escape. Be cautious, and be sure to travel light.bzinger and randomname Thank this. -

I once was interviewing with a small operation. I was asked that when on my home time, would I mind going in a servicing my truck. Now ordinarily I used to go to a former job and wash my rig. I had no problem with that. However this other company (I was interviewing at) wanted to know if I was willing to do oil changes, lubes, tire changes.
I said, "uhhh...no, don't you have any mechanics here"?
The gal (wife of the owner as such she was the owner as well) said, they appreciate it when the drivers take care of thier own trucks.
I said I appreciate not having to drive 40 miles in my car, get dirty for what pay for doing this?
She said $20 per hour, maybe for about 2, 3 hours the most.
I said, my gas will not be covered, and good-bye.
SO not saying that all mom/pop companies want you to service your own trucks, but if I'm only the driver, that's where it stops.
And yeah, family operation, well everyone that is family is YOUR BOSS. Cousins, nieces, nephews, aunt's, uncles, goldfish, hamsters, etc, etc.
You're still so low on the totem pole, you'll never see the light of daybzinger Thanks this. -
