I do know the pressure side has been replaced. As for checking the pyrometer, how do you recommend doing so? Get it to temp and check the sensor with a temperature gun?
New guy, First truck. Need some engine advice! 3406E power.

The best way to check it would be with a thermocouple connected to a multimeter while comparing reading to the gauge. As far as fuel lines, the suction side can be sucking air or even collapsing, both of which will cause performance issues.

Well, we got a bit accomplished. Re-ran the overhead, now the jakes sound fine. 5-6 jakes weren't set right. Finally got a boost gauge put in it, so I tested it out. Only getting max of 18-19lbs of boost in any gear. Is it that low because of the power setting? Or could the wastegate be stuck open a bit?

I can get my 3406 B to make 25 psi or darn close. It's supposed to be a 425 but I think someone has played with it because it pulls as good as our 2008 475 ISX. As for EGT's in the dead of summer up here in the northeast I do need to back out when I pull a good hill in the Poconos and what not, but as far as cruising down the highway at 60 mph with 85,000....EGT's are never a problem. I have 3.90 rears and LP 24.5 rubber.
To me.....and I am by no means an expert, it sounds alot like a leak in the boost system somewhere. That would cause both low boost and high EGT's.
Where did you mount the boost sensor? Are the air filters clean? -
Air filters are new, gauge source is at the drivers side of the motor on the cast elbow that goes into the head. Tomorrow I will hook up the actual boost leak setup they have at the shop to make sure. I have an appointment to get it tend up to 550/1850 tomorrow. Hopefully I can get it done before then. I'll be sure to let them know the ins and outs of what has been happening so far.

My 96 3406e 5ek has the boost reference type wastegate and it was doing the same as yours. I disconnected the linkage and made a slight adjustment on it and hooked it back up ad now mine makes boost up to about 25-30 pounds. It helped a lot a exhaust gas temps went down. you can test that theory with a pair of vise grips. just block or disconnect the boost reference line and see what happens. -
Well, disconnecting the boost line to the gate will just keep the gate shut won't it?
-
My 96 5ek is pushing out 24-26 most times but bumps to about 31 every now and then.

I wasn't able to get around to boost leak testing it, but I did get it turned up to 550/1850. Driving up there, boost was max of 16-18 lbs no matter gear or hill, and pressure on jakes is only 8 lbs. Now, after turning it up, the boost is now to 20-22 lbs and jake is still 8 lbs. This is all bob tailing, so how much will this change with a load on? I know my old mans (525/1850 cummins red top) can peg his 30 lb boost gauge and then some, and his jakes hold at 22-24 lbs bobtailing or loaded. Am I just worrying about nothing? Or is something seriously wrong here? I'm just panicking a little with this being an expensive investment.

How did you check for leaks? Did I read that this truck has an automatic trans?Last edited: Apr 3, 2015
