You could try out Chicago. I could probably direct you to a decent area within 25-30 minutes from the terminal.

Only thing with Chicago is the winters. Dear god... I hear the prices are up there as well. I imagine it's also super super busy out of there.

Yeah, winters can be rough LOL, but it's a good area for intermodal. Found this place online real quick, this is a pretty nice suburban area and is 20-30 minutes from the terminal (depending on traffic) http://www.apartments.com/brittany-court-la-grange-il/ypn68ps/

Traffic, well, it can be pretty bad but you see a lot of guys running 2nd and 3rd shift so outside of the normal rush hours (7am-9am, 3pm-6:30pm) traffic really isn't an issue.

There's cheap places of rent right by the Chicago yard. Avoid the south side. Yes it's busy but the office people are great. Yard is ok nothing fancy.

I live in Stockton lol, it's not that bad. We did have a break in a couple years back and some locals in our neighborhood shoot off their guns at New Years.

You mentioned 8Mile Road apartments, those are supposed to be really good place to live, Pavilions. I owned a condo off March Lane and Quail Lakes for 15 years-- Sunpointe, not a bad place to live, you might find one for rent in there-- it is a gated community.

I'm curious about this Intermodal thing out of French Camp-- do they need owner ops over there?

I believe just company drivers at the moment. I read some reviews about the Pavilions online. Dog attacks, Break Ins, paper thin walls with loudly fornicating neighbors... No thanks.

you could try Lodi. That would be close to Stockton and I don't think it's a terrible area, It would be better than Modesto or heck even Ripon may be a decent town

South Sacramento would be better than Stockton, but it is Sacramento's ghetto. Elk Grove is nice, but can be pricey with the exorbitant Mello-Roos. Lodi is not as nice and, from what I hear, going downhill. Nearby Galt is suppossedly on the uptick.

I grew up in Manteca. I have lived in Stockton, Sacramento-Elk Grove and Stockton. Elk Grove is nice but pricier compared to surrounding areas. Manteca or Lodi will offer good choices for the money. However you'd be living in Manteca or Lodi. :) Double Yellow is right about Galt.
