For some reason most leasing companies plate their trailers in Maine. Most of our company trucks are registered in Illinios but all our new trailers are Maine and leased. If you check the registration on one of your trailers you may find it's not registered in your company name, but a leasing comapny.

Indiana does not charge sales tax on all commercial transportation equipment. All maintenance is tax free to if you have a tax exempt number.

Not only is everybody registering in Indiana, they're also getting plates with the company's name in them.

I wonder how much that adds to the cost of the registration.

I've run Maine tags on every trailer I've ever owned,in 42 years, never ever an issue. Retired from trucking, but still have them on my car trailer, utility trailer and my gooseneck. Huge business in Maine, and they are grateful for all the revenue it brings into the state. Multi year tag, reasonable price, very simple to do,and you can buy any amount of years you want, and the best part,no sales tax. If you want to do it,google Staab Agency Maine Tags. Great people to work with, tags next day if you want.

I have a Indiana trailer plate and even though it's a permanent plate you still have to pay yearly. And it's not done by mail you have to actually go in person to the BMV.

That would be a pita. Maine,if you want 10 years, buy it,comes ready stamped,9 3/4 years later they'll send you a renewal notice. Can't be any easier.

    kenn2632 and JonJon78 Thank this.
