I recently got my own truck and I am leased onto a company doing local intermodal which pays pretty decent, but we get slow periods when west coast goes on strike a few times a year. We are also slow on Mondays and not necessarily worth going in for 1-2 short runs.

The truck is plated and insured by the company and running under their MC number. They know I’d like to pick up extra runs and said it was ok to use my truck if I got my own mc and plates. I have talked to a few companies that said they are willing to give me intrastate runs sat-mon on a as wanted basis.

Question is; can I have 2 mc’s on the truck? Or is this illegal?

Well the Beastie boys had 2 MCs and a microphone, so why can't you have 2 MC #s and one truck?

Sorry I couldn't resist. I'm interested in this too. I would guess its illegal. You get an inspection who gets the CSA points? Prolly better to get your own and contract out. I have no idea how easy it is to bid on intermodal loads with your own authority. Or if those loads get "locked" up by the existing players.

If you get your own authority you would have to insure the truck, full time... probably $650/mo or more. Plus the headaches and other expenses associated. It would make a lot more sense to run those loads under your current carrier's authority and let them keep 15% or so, you'd be even money, a lot easier for you, and they might even make a little extra money. win, win.

Besides insurance, what about the plate ? I doubt you can use the same one, and I'm not sure a truck can even register to two different authorities.

Around here most the intermodal brokers have preferred or contracted companies they use. The ones that arntpicked up are usually the #### runs, like the ones you have to sit all day on a bad paying run and the company fights all charges and refuses to pay in the end....

Ya its a bunch of what ifs.......
Right now I pay $40 a week x52 ($2,080) for plates which is kinda a rip off seeing as they only cost 1300 and wont let me pay for em up front.

    Insurance is $100 x 52

They pay us 67% of the load and a 25% surcharge

67% is what a company pays for power only, typically. Does the company own the rolling stock? Can you come in with your own plate?

It can be done since you have the leased companies permission. You'll need your own plate and insurance, drug testing program, etc. You'll need to cover up your name and numbers with your leased company's name and numbers when running their stuff. You won't need a MC# if staying intrastate, but you will need intrastate authority from OH.

If you're going to do this, it would probably be best to see if the company you're leased to now would keep you on as a "dedicated carrier"...basically letting them dispatch you running the same stuff you are now, but under your own MC#, tags, insurance, etc. You'll have to figure out how much more you'll need to get paid (perhaps an extra 10-15% to cover the costs they no longer need to), and you'd then be free to pick up whatever extra work you felt like picking up, whenever you felt like doing it...no questions asked, no legal issues.

The problem you'll face trying to get a second set of #'s, tags, etc. is that the state probably won't issue a 2nd registration for the same vehicle (much like you can't have more than one driver's license). Even if you buy your own tags outside of the company, they are usually tied to a "motor carrier responsible for the safety of the vehicle" (or something to that effect). In other words, they'll be tied to one company or the other...but not both.

It's a complicated situation, but your best 2 options will be to talk to your current company and work out a deal where you either 1) pull for them as a dedicated carrier running your own numbers; or 2) run their numbers and give them a cut of whatever you make on the side to compensate them for the use of their MC authority.

We used to get 70% up until november when we were bought. The new company dropped us 3 % rate and 7% fuel......

I had asked about the plates, the terminal manager said he didnt care , but the corporate offices said I could get my own plates but Id still have to pay them the 40 a week...

Theyre payroll department here is kinda screwed up. They paid me my sign on bonus 2 months longer than should have, and never caught it. Also never took out for 3 weeks of fuel in a row once and never got me. Although previously when they did that, I told them, and they took it all out of one check. So sometimes its best not to open your mouth here lol.

The company has their own trailers but we use the rail companies since its faster and rentals $75 a day and deductible as well as chargeable $100 to customer.
This place makes money off everyone and everything.

They wont release me onto my own mc. They have a set OO program. They make a extra $700 off each truck per year charging that $40 a week Actually its prob alot more as we only run Ohio as of this year unless we do line hauls, then they give us a diff plate....

I have this wild feeling i'm just spinning my wheels trying to make a few extra bucks on the side unless I work longer days tues-thursday(busy days)
By the time I get plates insurance and licensing, I don't see to much profit to be worth the headache.
