The problem with short runs is there are more of them, hence, more problems potentially. Like 5 hour live unloads, preloaded trailers way overweight that take 4 hours to rework. Stuff like that throws off your whole schedule and gets you screwed because of having to have loads pulled at the last second and then only garbage being left on the board at that point. I'll take that 1.77/mile 1700 mile run any day of the week over short ####. Of course, short stuff is necessary though for obvious reasons.

I think we run our businesses differently though. My goal is to average 1.60/1.70 mile, and I run 3000 miles per week. I don't sit places waiting on loads, I keep moving. I book loads 7 days in advance generally. Except in the northeast, they release loads much later so I generally only book 3-4 days in advance when in the northeast. As long as my revenue goals are met I don't necessarily care about per mile rates. With that said though, in order to make revenue goals you have to book high paying freight since it's physically impossible to meet revenue goals when taking cheap ### freight.mickimause and Drifter42 Thank this.

Yeah not all long loads pay crap, it's just a matter of getting on top of them before someone else does. Like stevep says, the more loads the more possible problems. Everyone finds their balance that they're comfortable with. One way isn't necessarily right or wrong.
I haven't been up to Carlisle since earlier last year, probably at least 4 months. Did we lose the York Frito contract? Haven't seen any of those. My Lowes loads are showing up unconfirmed and never seem to confirm, they just disappear. Same pattern for several days, been watching them. Dunno what is up with that. Don't want to sit but I'll sit for a day or so before I get antsy and need to move. I come out here to make money not to sit around. That's what I do at home LOL.
Wish the Target dedicated account paid OK for ICs. I'd probably be pretty happy on one of those if it paid OK but from what I hear it pays crap. That is my fallback plan if the o/o thing goes south for whatever reason - just get on a decent dedicated gig as a company driver for a while. Couldn't pay me to go back to OTR, at least not for SNI again.mickimause Thanks this. -
Yeah man I'm totally different.
The longer loads just pay too trashy for me.
In the past month I've only done two loads over 330 miles and that was to get me out of the Northeast.
Most my loads average 100-250 miles but they pay good.
I don't sit places waiting on loads but whenever I stop I do check quickly.. but I do check a lot.
Only book a day or two ahead of time except once Friday comes.. no later than Friday afternoon I make sure to be booked through Monday because I've learned if I wait till the weekend I get screwed with leftovers.
Here's an example of how I run

Yep when we were talking on the CB a few weeks ago a lot of what you told me about sounded pretty good. I would definitely give that account a shot if my truck blew up tomorrow. I've spoiled myself running very close to "dedicated" runs on choice and getting to know my routes and customers. It's a nice feeling. I don't mind going the same places as long as it's mixed up a little now and then. Back and fourth to the same two places every day I couldn't do, but from a DC to stores all over? I wouldn't mind that a bit.
