I am having an insanely hard time getting this trailer in the box. I did fine my first two days but now I can't get it in to save my life. And there is one instructor on the range so she is too busy to even teach us anything. I'm about to hang it up and go home.

I received some advice one day that totally helped become better at backing. Just think about steering into the side of the trailer that you want to go the opposite direction. For example if you're backing into a dock and the left side of your trailer is getting too close to another truck all you have to do is turn your steer tires into that side of the trailer to make it go the opposite direction. Once you have the trailer tracking the right direction then straighten the steering wheel. Just think about pushing the trailer with the steering wheel that's what helps me.

There's two bits of advice that have helped me and I've given out. (Both from forum members. If you recognize it, speak up!)

1). Imagine your feet and legs dangling off the back and back like that.

2). Grab an inexpensive tractor-trailer toy and practice with that.

For some reason I thought you went with SNI... Huh.

At what point do you find yourself messing up most?

Going to look in my SNI trainee handbook thingy and see if I can't find the diagrams. Those helped me grasp the concept.

Been meaning to give away all of sni's best secrets, but I always forget the book when I go home. Makes it difficult to scan! One of these days I'll remember and put them up as attachments.

That 45 can be tough when starting out. Are you starting your turn too soon?

When I did the dot test, I got as close to in the box as possible without hitting the cones. And then I just pulled far ahead enough to get lined up properly. It may require a slight serpentine. Then just back on in.

I took mine in Washington. But there was a point system. A mess up being a point. So many points and you fail. That went for each leg of the test. A pull forward on the 45 was a point. Don't be afraid to use up a point or two if you need it. If you can get it in one shot then great. But it doesn't have to be perfect.

Hope that helps even a small amount vegan.

just follow the trailer. if it goes left move steering wheel toward it. so trailer goes left move wheel left to push it back right, if that makes sense. if trailer goes right move wheel right and it will move back to the middle/left side. thats how i learned it

Vegan, I think you may be working too hard, overthinking. Give yourself some room, pull past the slot (use a marker, I use the front of the trailer or my body) for a timed moment, turn into the serpentine 'til you can see it. I do the "right is left and left is right" for guiding the back of the trailer. Don't get frustrated, whatever else you do. Can you practice a few more times? Once you get it you'll laugh about it. Best

I agree with this. If I'm not thinking about it then I can get that trailer into the hole like it was made to be there. ...soon as I start thinking about it...may as well be a virgin on his first time.
