Did a little research on this, and I think I've found what your lawyer is doing. If a corporation spins off a smaller company, any assets assigned to the spin-off have their bases reset so the spin-off company gets to depreciate them all over again -- and at the current market value.

However, I can't see where 7 years comes in -- residential rental property has a 27.5-year schedule. Commercial rental property has a 39-year schedule.

I suppose if the property appreciated considerably, it may be worthwhile to spin off the asset to claim a little extra depreciation, but you'd need to be a pretty big player to make it worth the fees & taxes of starting another company.

Forgot to add Fleet One set-up fee: $50 (one time cost)

The years you have a maximum, you can take it faster you only need about 3 companies to make it spin really depenfs hoe many rentals on has. Also if you treat them as commercial you cab base a cap rate based on return. Then they can sell for more.

Hard to say without more info. In general, the 13 will give you more options for cruising at an ideal rpm. Likewise more opportunities to stay in the power climbing up hill, and more opportunity to stay on strong engine braking going downhill.

The downside is more upfront cost, a less robust transmission, & slightly more weight.

If you have a 10, I wouldn't swap in a 13 unless your 10 needed to be rebuilt and you had a good deal on a 13...

    Double Yellow is right..

everyone thinks a 13-15-18 speed trannies are built for abuse, They are NOT! The 10 speed Eaton/Fuller trans is TOUGH as they come, I run a 10 right now,Have 1.2 Million on it Still very quiet.

Same with a mack 5 speed, Simply indestructible..........

Those double overdrive transmissions simply don't have the lifespan on them as Direct Trannies have

I don't mean capacity to handle torque (13's can be specified to take more torque than 10's), but rather their more frequent & costly repairs/maintenance, particularly when driven by less capable operators.

Anecdotally, talking to the shop guys at Con-Way Truckload. CWTL used to have a pretty experienced workforce but, like most larger carriers, they began gearing their operation towards cheaper "student" drivers over the past 10 years.

An unfortunate byproduct was they moved away from (manual) 13 speeds because the new drivers tended to break them -- something they didn't do as often with 9 & 10 speeds.

Outstanding thread DY!!! Read every post and gleaned some very informative information that you provided, so a big thanks to you. As for 13 speeds DY is correct in that they help keep the engine in a sweet spot on the power band while going amongst the hills. 10 speed have to lug down past it, then when you down shift the rpm's go right past it. I liked the ability to flick it from 13-12 when hitting the hill as opposed to having to let it slow then shift. I had about a 500 rpm band that was where I kept it while driving a cummins-powered Volvo 780. Worked wonderfully. It's not something for the neophyte as it's very easy to get confused and start jamming the overdrive. I got a lot of practice pulling doubles around NYC.:biggrin_2556:
