Thought I'd throw a quick update in here. Still only great things to say about about the tech school/community college route. Passed my road test this week, we're blasting through miles and currently at 200/1000 miles we run. Should be done in a week or week and a half though, actually sooner than expected. Out of 8 starting students for cdl-a, we're down to 3 (some dropped to B, couple dropped out) so we get a ton of time behind the wheel (convoying in 2 trucks) and obviously, the instructor ratio is good.

Has a pre-hire from H.O. Wolding a while ago, since we're so close to grad, just did a phone interview and hired on yesterday. Orientation starts in a week or two, depending on when my miles wrap up. They were my first choice of companies that hire students, looking forward to getting on to the next phase and getting out on the road, and a paycheck.

So to wrap up, if possible, go the community college route. After doing it, less students, more road and range time, way cheaper. Some companies guys in my class talked to don't even hire out of places like Roadmaster. My newbie 2 cents.

Neither one can be PTDI Certified because they are not qualified. First qualification that comes to mind is length of program plus a multitude of others.

It's not always cheaper. The CC closest to me that has a CDL program is more expensive then the surrounding private schools. And the CC has no mention of job placement assistance. --Not really necessary, I know. But nice to fall back on if the offers just aren't coming in for some reason.

The extra hours are nice if you are new to equipment operation, or new to work requiring mechanical aptitude. But if you are going to end up at a company that insists you train with their trainer for 6 weeks anyway, the extra school time is probably not as beneficial as you would think. Driving experience is driving experience. After being taught enough to get your CDL, it's all about stick time. At that point you pretty much need to figure out the nuances on your own. You can do that stick time in a school truck, or in a company truck while getting paid.

And unless the school is training you with a loaded trailer, you are in for a whole new ball game anyway.

A good CDL school will give you some loaded driving time. You are absolutely right about it being a different world. We gave our students a 53 ft with 20K on it and almost all of them remarked about the difference, especially stopping distance.

Reading thru the Community College web-site, they promote many Company's that hire from your School. (Big Companies) Additionally, looking over the Course, they also give you 1,000 miles driving time behind the wheel. Roadmaster cant do the same. Take the 9 week course. Economics-looking over your earnings after one years work, then subtract the additional money you'll pay for the school with higher tuition...you'll make out. Plus, when learning a new skill you enjoy the extra time to help you digest learning driving/operating skills. vs. fast paced curriculum. Safety is learned thru learning.

Finished up yesterday with about 1100 road miles. Off to orientation Monday at HO Wolding, I'll post updates in the Wolding thread. Can't recommend enough the Ptec program over the private school alternatives in the Tampa area. Wish me luck!

Congratulations on joining the dark side. Good luck and be safe out there. By the way you can now remove the student in your profile.

Hey 12string, I'm going the same route you did... I start ptec May 18th, and I am trying to get on with Wolding as well. We have chatted a little in the Wolding thread. Any advice about ptec before I start? I couldn't be more excited to go to ptec instead of road master.

Ptec was great, a staff change but Laura Kingsland is still there, she's the head of the cdl program there. The coursework/tests are online, so you can work ahead to make your life easier and have it done by the time the road driving phase starts. Like any school, less talkmore listen, just pay attention and soak up what they teach you, and you'll be fine. Tell Laura Gene says hi, if you mention Wolding she'll know. :)
