I know when I use to be a lumper at Sysco when dot showed up we would have to pull out all the pallets asap so the drive could get going. even if there wasn't space on the dock to break them down

Yes, I am still hear. Sorry it has been forever since I posted on here. Dot rocks! I've been busy working and still living my life on weekends. Money is great, I'm a transfer driver and still bank. Nice truck, I lucked out and was assigned a trainer truck. Meaning its a Volvo 670 instead of the 630. In Joliet Illinois we have lease trucks because we don't have an on site shop. Therefore, it's pretty much luck of the draw after your done with training. You get what is available. Nonetheless it's mine, no slip seat. I run everywhere except the west coast. Can't get there and back in five days. I'm home every weekend, as thats how freight seems to move here in Chicago. I do pickups, no touch deliveries, custom hauls (third party freight to get the truck home without running empty), and transfers between our own DC's. I would suggest everyone who lives within range of one of our locations applies. It's a great company. If you have any questions just ask. I'll try and help. Just a heads up, they are very selective. You well not get an offer quickly. Multiple interviews, and tests. Some come with your A-game or head over to one of the bottom feeder companies. Students are welcome in some positions and locations. But you better be the ####. Communication skills are very sought after. If you already know everything, apply elsewhere. Final thought, you are not applying to be a truck driver...If you think you are, see the previous sentence.

I was hired in November, got done "training" in early January. Training was just learning how to break down loads and fill out paperwork, and my trainer was super cool. It took a while to go solo because of the 2 week orientation at the headquarters location and all of the holidays around the end of the year. When I was a trainee, I don't think I had a week where we were out more than 4 days, and often not all in one stretch.

The job is awesome. I got lucky too and got a solo truck with only 36 thousand miles on it. It's mine. Nobody else drives it. I usually get at least 2 days on the weekend at home; a lot of times it's three. I'll get home Friday evening and leave out on Monday sometime. Lately, after I complained about being out 13 days inside of 14 with less than 24 hours at home on that one day off, I've been getting home at least once during the week, if not twice, AND getting the weekend or the three day weekend. Don't worry, that long stretch out is totally not typical. I had told them to keep me running because I need money, so they did, but my wife and I realized that's not the best for us, so I mentioned it and dispatch has really worked with me to get me paid while also getting me home...

The money is great for what you do. Sometimes you make more than 200 dollars for an hour of sitting in your truck while someone unloads you, other times you make about 15 bucks an hour for doing a lot of manual labor throwing groceries (I'm a delivery driver). On the average it all comes out nice though; I'm usually making at least 24 dollars an hour every day of work. If dispatch sees you getting low on a paycheck, they'll help you out with big money loads to pick you up. The last 2 weeks I've been home a ton and still grossed 1200-1300 each week.

They're hiring like mad in West Tennessee. Get in touch with me if you're in the area and I'll answer any questions you have.

Any idea how they would be if a driver wanted to take some unpaid time off of say a week or 2 a year? For example to go on a vacation with your family beyond vacation time you may have earned. Do you know if they would allow that, take your truck away and have to be assigned a new one when you returned?

I have pension coming in so could afford to do that and wondered if DOT would have any issues with that?
