We have several dedicated lanes that are paid salary. If you count daily pay then a lot of the loads I'm under pay by the day not by the mile because we may sit 4 or 5 days then move 100 miles and sit again.
Combined Transport starts their heavy haul drivers off at $5k a month plus commission/bonus and Lone Star pays quad drivers salary plus as well.
Carrier pays a salary!

All I can say about the other "salary" positions is there seems to be a lot of strings attached...
-
No strings where I work. Daily salary, regular schedule. Extra work is optional and always available.

That sounds pretty good. Website says 1 year of flatbed exp required. really? What if I got 3 years and a perfect record, do I really need flat bed experience too?

I have seen several companies offer a minimum guarantee of X amount per week. So if you make more in CPM then fine. I was a manager for 12 years between trucking careers and we had a salary. We had guys that came in early and did their job extremely well and then we had guys that came in 20 minutes late, went to luch 30 minutes early and worked like turtles. The same would go for trucking. Some guys would get the gravy runs and others would get the city crap, both salary of course.
I think a hybrid system would work best, salary plus incentive pay for odd/hard work. Just my opinion.dogtrucker Thanks this. -
I am sure you have a great job. Probably chat it up at some of the stops, maybe even take a nap at the toll booth before heading back for the day. Easy livin'... Then along comes Big bad JB hunt and gets the contract and forces you guys to work for cpm. Oh no you say! I'm not gonna work for half of what I was getting. But take a step back and look at the customer costs. It's all about business and you would be on the losing end.

There was an article in Landline, I think in February, where the guy made the statement that if you are paid by the mile, the carrier thinks of you as a temporary worker. HOS rules have placed all the burden of wasted time at shippers and consignees on my ability to earn the money to support my family. On top of that I wait on my dispatcher to find a load. Seems odd I see other trucks loaded and moving and I'm setting all the time my pay check is getting smaller. I never thought of myself as a temporary worker but I see his point. Sometimes it seems you need an accountant to figure our my pay stub. The up and down pay puts a lot of stress on the wife. I keep an eye on the jobs board if I can find one of those salary jobs I'll give it a strong look.

Saia has hourly jobs with over-time and they are mostly local
Frito-Lay is local and pays a daily salary.
Mclane has mostly local and I think they have salary - at any rate, they pay pretty good.
K&B (where I work) has salary jobs but to get the best rate you have to live near one of their accounts.
Wal-Mart is cpm but has great accessorial pay and benefits, starts at $74k and is mostly local - of course, you have to be an Eagle Scout.
Generally, if we want to make over $65k/year, we have to do something special. I am thinking hard on Keen Transport which will train to do heavy - haul, starts at 48 cpm for the basic stuff and offers a $4-5k sign on. I have talked to 2 of their drivers who had been there 3 and 4 years. They were very happy with it and said they were already getting over $80k with plenty of room to grow.
I am convinced there are great opportunities for us if we search for them and we are willing to take on more responsibility.
Good luck to you! -
Its pretty simple where I work. You show up Monday, take your load, deliver it, and repeat till Friday. Go to that bank and get your money. You know what the amount will be. Piece of cake....
