Chicago CDL schools charge $1,500 - $2,000. You should think about attending one of them. A lot of guys at my school were from outside of Illinois. That way if you don't like the company you went with, then you have the freedom to leave and not owe them thousands of dollars. Remember....the turnover in trucking is 100% +.

I just wanted to give a quick update. I had to put off going to school to take care of some issues that came up first. Now that those are all taken care of, I have been in contact with Knight, and i've been told all I need to do is have my permit, and re apply. So I'm hoping this weds I will pass my permit test/s the first try, and I will have an official start date for class before to long. They have classes that start every Monday, so I am hoping I can get in pretty quick. I also believe that I have decided to apply for Reefer. I still kind of go back and forth in my head about it. I did have a question though. With these bigger companies, how are toll roads typically handled? Does the driver have to pay out of pocket, and then get reimbursed? Or are most setup so they can just pass on through? I'm really excited to finally get this started and rolling. I'm looking forward to the travels, and all of the learning that is in front of me. Especially for a guy who has never drove a manual ever. lol I'll try to keep you all updated on how schooling is in indy when I get there.

Most companies use prepass, which allows them to load your toll funds ahead of time so all you have to do is wave at the toll attendant on your way through. There will be places where prepass does not work, such as Oklahoma. You will need to pay cash for those, then turn in your receipt to get reimbursed.

I have a question I was hoping someone could answer. I tried to contact the BMV today, but due to election day, the contact center is closed. So since I am wanting to start with Knight, I have to already have my cdl permit. In order to get my permit, do I have to show the BMV a dot physical before I can test for the permit? I see that other schools/companies do your physical at school and then you get your permit after you drug test/physical. Thanks ahead of time.

You should be able to get a permit without a physical, but every state and every school is different. Contact your recruiter at knight and learn what they require regarding a physical. I don't remember presenting my medical card when I got my Indiana permit, but, due to being from out of state, I also had a huge stack of paperwork to deal with and my current medical card was part of the stack in my folder.

I had to show them my DOT Physical paperwork when I passed my test for my permit. That was 8 years ago. I am training a new guy and he also had to do it this way.

Another update! I got my 2 year med card, and I have my CDL Permit. I had to reapply at Knight since my app was over 30 days. I did all of that today, and talked to the recruiter today. I can either opt to go to Orientation this coming Monday, or wait a week and go the next Monday. I think I am going to opt to go this Monday, but I just need to make sure I have everything all set before I go. With that being said, I'm more then positive I have everything. Last thing I need to get together is my prescription information for meds I was prescribed in case they happen to show up on the drug screen at all. Orientation is 3 days, then I will come back home since I live closeish to the terminal. And they said Schooling should start that following Monday, as long as the hiring process goes good, and I get in the system.

My next question would be, what all did you guys take with you to the hotel for schooling? I'm trying to think, other than the basics like clothes, and toiletries etc... what else I will need to bring, and i can't think of anything. I will be coming back home on the weekends, until that last week before I go out with a trainer. I will be driving my car as well, so thankfully I can drive to a Walmart or other places while i'm down there to get something to eat. I'll try to update this page with my progress as I go along. I'm excited to get started!!!

Well I officially have my orientation date set for 5/11. They where able to get me started next week. For anyone who is interested in starting with Knight in Indianapolis, they've changed hotel companies. It used to be the quality inn, which has a bunch of negative reviews. Now they put everyone up in La Quinta, and yes you still get a room to yourself! I'll try to update this as much as I can as I go through orientation, and training. And if anyone is going through the orientation/training at the same time let me know! I'm really excited to get this all started and going! I've got a lot to learn, and a lot to soak in.
