Ok I am getting ready to take the written exam for my cdl, does anyone know if they give you the eye exam with it? I know I will probably need glasses soon, I use readers now, was wondering what kind of test is it, is it hard, can I just wear my readers and do it? Ty John

Do it with out, if you fail you will need to get glasses. If you do it with readers you will be restricted to wearing glasses full time. Not to bad if you can get out and buy some glasses right away. If not you will be wearing your readers, or taking a chance of getting fines for not wearing them.

I'm not sure if NJ gives any kind of 'preliminary' vision test, but you will have to take a vision exam, as part of your DOT Medical Card, by one of the doctors on the 'DOT Medical Registry list', before you ever get your CDL.

Wow it is so easy, here is a link to what it is all about - http://www.truckmed.com/vision.htm
my last dot was about a month ago, the assistant to the PA gave the test to me, she said "read the lines on the wall" and I did, and because I have new glasses, I had problems with focusing on the last line so I just fudged it, not a big deal because I feel they want to make sure you are not blind and that's it. -
not sure about nj, but dmv in calif. will have to read letters off of board thats located behind clerk. but you will definitely get a eye test at a d.o.t. exam. if possible dont use glasses. if you know for sure you would fail it, go see a eye doctor first to get glasses. that way you wont have to get a 3 month card to go get it fix if you failed the dot eye test. hope that made sense lol

you can always be proactive and just go to an eye doc and take an exam. if you don' need glasses great if you do he will help you get them. when you go to DMV your eye exam usually covers that portion of the test for DMV.
-
I'd go get an eye test if I was you. If either eye is worse than 20/40 or your combined vision is worse than 20/40 than spring for a pair of glasses for the dot physical.

In PA you will take an eye test at the DMV the day you take your written tests. perhaps to make sure you didn't somehow cheat on the eye test at the doctors office?
-
In Texas you must have a current medical to take the written test. if you let your medical cert expire you must take all tests again. Written and driving! I thought that was the new federal rules, but maybe different in other states.

I think you are correct. im pretty sure you MUST have a current medical card PRIOR to taking the permit test nationwide. at least this is how it was when I went for my permit.
