on our 780 Volvo with 9 speed transmission whenever we shift from 4th to 5th using splitter, there is a grinding noise like a gear is being hit. All other gears are shifting normally. We just had transmission replaced in W.Virginia at an independent shop, phone call to them reviled no guarantee of their work there is a 1 yr. warranty from the co. that rebuilt the tranny but we don't know where the problem is in the shifter or the transmission any help would be appreciated.

The back box of the transmission has sliding clutches that mesh together to give you high range. That material is what keeps the sliding clutch from grinding and that is what you're hearing. It is safe to drive but if there is warranty on the transmission you need to give those folks a call to see what they are going to do for you.

    Good luck.

I have the same problem and was told it's the syncro gear. I haven't fixed it yet and have done about 60k miles since it started .

When I switch from high back to low it seems to take a second too long. No grinding though. I think I just need a new gasket.

why would you use a shop that does not guarantee their work?

Check the air supply filter for the tranny. It's also possible there is an issue with the slave cylinder not moving as freely as it should.

I did say it was in West Virginia there just wasn't a lot to choose from, as it was they charged $500 to be towed about 15 miles. Got to wonder how much it would have been to go 50 down the toll road? At least that would have got us to a shop we knew in Princeton, we would have been better off. Yes and would have been guaranteed. Isn't hindsight great, but we are here to share and learn from others experierences.
