What Is the 16-Hour Short-Haul Exception?
If you usually come back to your work-reporting location and go home at the end of your workday,
you might be able to use the 16-hour short-haul exception. This exception allows you to extend the
14-consecutive-hour driving window once every 7 consecutive days. In order to use this exception,
    you must do the following:
    • You must return to your work reporting location that day, as well as for your last 5 duty tours. A
duty tour is the period of time from when you come to work to when you leave work. It is your
“workday,” the time between your off-duty periods of at least 10 consecutive hours.
    • You must be released from duty within 16 hours after coming on duty.
    • You must only use this exception once every 7 consecutive days.

The clock starts the second you punch in and ends the second you punch out. IF you take a lunch and the two breaks as all employees take, then that is counted towards the 12/14 hour limit - 11 is your driving limit.

simply put, the company is going to have you use what ever type of HOS that benefits them the most. the job of a driver is to work within that system to make it acceptable for them. ie, maybe take longer one day to bur n some extra hours so it becomes a 5 day work week instead of a 6, not saying doing anything like that is the "right" thing to do, but pretty sure it's been done in the past.

It's a myth that all local jobs are like that. I've been working locally for a year now, five days a week. The most hours I've worked in a week in the last 12 months is around 55 hours. More hours, I suppose, equals more money, but I'll take the free time! If you're going to work 14 hours every day you might as well go back otr!
