Trying to figure out how big a compliment this is.
I was with the same outfit for 5 years. About the same time, a bunch of us got tired of the BS, questionable pay, and the growing schism between the drivers (who were doing about 85% of the actual WORK) and the office personnel (who seemed to have a 'wander in at 9, leave at 5, put off whatever isn't done until next day' attitude).
Everything from repair orders to loadouts were being left to the drivers to manage and we were putting in 16+ hour days. So we all started pursuing other options. (I for one was losing a lot of friends and I didn't want to be the last guy there.) So in the course of about 4 months 2/3rds of the drivers left the company.
Management didn't seem too concerned.
Until I heard from somebody who stayed, that MY replacement split a trailer in half. (knocked over a street light and it 'karate chopped' the trailer in half! LOL) and a guy covering one of my clients (and old hand from my time there,) said he had no idea why I'd done that run as long as I did (25 stops up the east coast over 4 days including 6 stops in Manhattan) .
Now I hear some of the guys they brought up from the Carolinas refuse to go to NYC, so my old dispatcher called me over the weekend and said, "The old man wants you back, and he wants to talk numbers with you."
Now, it'd be nice if the Boss man called me personally and I'm in a position when I've already got a good new job. But it does raise the possibility, just how much is he willing to pay to get me back?
Just rough numbers here but I've taken a job that's 40% more in base rate and is strictly Drop & Hook. So I'd need a raise of about 50-60% above what I was making before because the old job was very physical and I was doing a lot of the loading & unloading myself. (is that not unreasonable?) Plus I understand that the boss had a very good year on the backs of the drivers that were working there last year. (Top 20 to Top 5 of the North American Van Line operators nationwide) So it's not like I'm drawing blood from a stone.
Just wanted to hear a few opinions. (and brag.)
Anyone ever been 'courted' back to a previous employer?

The grass is NOT always greener back at the " OLD " ranch......
unloader Thanks this. -
A bird in the hand , just saying. A D&H job in hand for a physically demanding job you once left.
Not being ugly , but this is a no brainer. -
OMG can you imagine me going back to Trans Scam
the 2 year recent experience to get to a good company couldn't get there fast enough -
Well I have never been 'courted back', I have seen other employers that did that. I even worked for some employers that did entice an employee back. From what I have seen, it does not work out going back. To much baggage and the issues that sent the employee out the door always resurface. If a boss mismanages his company once, most 'bosses' are too proud to actually learn the lessen.
From what you describe there is a definite management problem and I don't see a boss, manger, or owner taking a lesson or lead from a driver.
That said I have seen a lot of people parlay this situation into a raise at the current job, but the money would have to be stupid good and with management position in your hands, to even seriously consider going back to poorly managed company. Then, that might not be enough to make things work.
The fact the boss didn't call you tells me the problem is the boss. You probably had a good relationship with the dispatcher and he is just looking to fill out his fleet. The boss does not have a clue and could care less.Hammer166, Lonesome and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this. -
There is one company that has asked me to come back and I would go back in a second if I needed a job. The only reason I left was to be home more. Luckily it wasn't because of bad blood. really liked working there just hated leaving the house

When ever I left an employer, I left for reasons that will not improve if I went back. if you go back, you'll be taking 4 steps backwards. Never look back. Things were not so good as you say and do you realistically think they will improve? If the boss/owner wanted everyone to stay in the first place, he would have done a better job of it way back when.

Tell him you want double what he was paying you earlier plus a good size sign on bonus ... Float it out there see what they come back with ... Even then, you have a good job, pays good and is relatively easy, so there's that ...
