I've read and heard a little bit here and there about companies charging health insurance co-pays. And some of them seem high. For example, a driver with one dependent said his insurance co-pay is $88/week.

What sort of co-pay can a single person with no dependents expect to pay with the various companies that hire drivers right out of school?

    thestoryteller Thanks this.

Co-pay and cost are two different items when you're talking insurance talk. Co-pay is what you'll pay for a doctor visit. Then you'll have deductables for the year. Cost is what you pay to have the insurance and what I've seen for a single person that should average around $50 a month but of course it all depends on the company and what the benefits are. $88 a week is way too high IMO.

I guess I used the wrong word. Co-pay is what we called it when I was in newspaper business and company wanted union personnel to pay part of the cost of our health insurance.

Union made a big deal out of vehemently opposing the co-pay but eventually gave in, probably because members would not have voted to strike over it.

    $50/month sounds about right nowadays.

I think the term co-pay gets used for both scenerios......... you are paying part of the insurance cost and/or you are paying part of the doctor visit........

I cannot speak for trucking but I know in different professions people pay $100 - $500 per month for their "co-pay" portion of the monthly insurance premium........... :yes2557:

Some may pay even more....... I don't know anything about what insurance costs if you go get it yourself but I am sure it is EXPENSIVE!

Realize that top-of-the line health care insurance with all the perks (medical, dental, vision and prescription) costs a company $10,000 - $12,000 per year for each employee! Yep...... $1,000 per month, per employee......... and that is if they are part of a larger group buying together! :biggrin_25521:

Wanna make money? Go into the insurance business......... :biggrin_25523:

Storyteller: I currently buy insurance from American National. It costs $239 ever quarter and has a large deductible. I also contribute $225/month to a health savings account.

So it might not be as expensive as you think, if one doesn't mind a bare bones policy.

I just want to get some idea of what my piece of the action will be if I go into truck driving.
