Thanks thats what i figured just wanted to get a second opinion and also guessing that we would only have the hours as of one driver since I would have to be in the passenger seat the whole time??

Even if the answer was 'no' ...... wouldn't it still be good training to have a student run a 'dummy' log ?

    I think yes.

i would say yes, if the learners permit is driving he would be on duty driving, you would be on duty not driving

If you are the designated observer and not in the bunk on Line2 ..and sitting in the right seat, your duty status should be Line 4 not driving. Be sure both logs agree on duty status changes.

Since you can only work 14 hours per day, besides the pretrip you can drive for the entire day. How do you do this? Don't stop for anything.

Say you have a 30 minute pretrip so that leaves you with 13.5 hours left then the learner can drive for say 7 hours and then you will need your 30 minute break because you will now take over the driving and you need to have that 30 minute break. Now you drive the last 6 hours of the day. So, out of a 14 hour day you drove 13 of them. You are only limited by your not being able to drive after 14 hours from starting on duty.

Hmmm just came to my mind... You drive for the first 11 hours then trainee drives the next 11 hours. You are in the jump seat and not driving so I can see you driving 22 hours in a day then taking a 10.

If the trainee only has a learners permit, YOUR log book had better show line 4 whenever HIS log book is on line 3...otherwise, he's either been driving unsupervised or you've been falsifying your log book. And yes, unless your operation falls under one of the exemptions where no log book is required (i.e. 100 air-mile radius, farm, etc...) then he'd need to have a log book and keep it current to his last change of duty status.
