Actually, this isn't good advice, at 18 you can get a CDL A, but will be limited to the state your licensed, unless you can find enough local work as a OO, or just talk with local companies, to see if any will hire you, good luck

What did you haul? Farming equipment? Obviously it's not impossible to be an 18 year old 18 wheeler. That is nice to know.

Go to the farmer. Do it before you're 18. See if they need a little help. Explain what you wanna do. Work for him/her over the summer months. Not the greatest way to earn money, but it's good honest work. Do a good job, build a solid working relationship with them, as you'll likely need them for future job references.
There's also the custom harvesting companies that are usually hiring. Google itnicedude80 Thanks this. -
Nicedude80 why aren't you working in hooters cooking chicken wings? Or a sports bar etc.....
have fun at your age young man.......trucking is a lonely isolated life....nicedude80 Thanks this. -
Local air freight in DFW TX. Then moved on to food distribution, then decided to buy my own truck.nicedude80 Thanks this.

If airfreight in DFW is like anything it is at ORD you can keep it. These guys often times wait 2 or 3 hours just to get into a dock and then 4 more hours before they are serviced.Last edited: Jan 21, 2015

I already told you what I think this career choice but if you are really set on this watch yourself very carefully the next several years. Don't blow stop signs, don't speed, and above all do not drink and drive ever. Any blemish on your driving record could come back to haunt you when you'll start applying at companies.

I asked him to go to college for a year after high school. He did made good grades. When school got out he came to me and and said "Dad I know this is the last thing you want to hear but I found a truck and a grain wagon package deal. It's what I want to do. " He was wrong about one thing, doing what he wants is exactly what I want him to do not what someone else thinks is best for him. He didn't lease he filed for his own US DOT number. Didn't need an MC since he was hauling strictly exempt and couldn't leave the state.
Like I said there been plenty of nights he layed under it all night to run the next day. Or waited in line all night to dump at a feed mill. I will say it comes natural to him, at 21 he has his own MC and a second truck finding a good driver is another story.mrbmg Thanks this. -
18 enables you to run intrastate. No haz mat. You'll be the baddest 18 yo in your area. How many 18 yo even have a job? Rock that. Test is easy.
