Hey guys some stuff about me im 22 years old 23 in August jus finished my first week of truck school and so far at least 8 recruiters came in trying to sell us their company 7 of them were all otr mclane interstate fastneal etc

I remember when i first came in to complete my paperwork for my school the president asked me if i thought i would have to go otr and he said that wont be the case because local companies love to hire students from his school no experience. .

But for some reason i don't think that there are many out there and i do not want to go otr but if i have to to build experience i will

    1. So heres my question what otr companies have the most time home i understand its less pay but at this point im looking to just gain that one year experience while being at home the most i can ( my wife is in the army we are having a baby she got stationed here so no family just us here so i would like to be here for her as much as i can) and move on to local

    2. What type of local jobs/companies hire recent cdl grads with no experience dump truck garbage truck ?

O yeah i live in Tacoma Washington fwiw

Ignore the experiance requirments and apply to everybody. The worst they can say is no. There are plenty of local gigs that hire fresh drivers. Sell yourself. Especialy the army wife/new kid/need local, stuff. You have a clear reason to work hard excc.. that has value

Will they volunteer any info who/what local driving companies hire through them?

It's good that there are a few local driving outfits that hire new CDL drivers, but just realize, if later you decide you want a regional multi-state gig, some will not put much stock in "local" driving employment history, as they are looking for experience with logging and multiple state operation, etc

X2. Local and otr are 2 differant animials, the skill sets are not the same. Basic driving/customer relations/ dock bumping. Will translate, but time away from home, long drives with little to no breaks, self starting, trip planing for fuel/parking/appt. Do not. If you go local you will have a hard time getting otr with the top companys. Its all what you want out here. If you want to be local and top pay, flats/tanks/haz/food serv. (I dont recomend food)

Any school making such a promise can be sued.

No school can make ANY promise to the students. all they can say is, "you might be able to".

It's like them promising you that you WILL GET your CDL on your first try. What happens to the ones that have to go back, 2,5, 10 times??

If it is In PRINT on your student contract, then make sure they deliver.

If not, see what a lawyer says to get back your money.

Schools do need to be careful of what they promise.

At a risk of high jacking...

    From the Washington Times:
Unemployed lawyers sue schools over promises of jobs

Gotta love it when lawyers teach other lawyers to sue lawyers....o_O

That's just the thing, the empty promise.

Better to have said something like, "we will try to help you find employment"

    Or

"depending on market availability, you may not find the exact position you want right away"

    or

"Best to look for employment on your own, as we do not make promises"..

But as for advice, I don't have any experience with the trucking market, but the best job I landed was at an optical lab. They wanted experience, but I had none. Went in anyway, gave the lab manager my resume in person (I'd also mailed one just in case...) and talked with him for about 15 minutes. He called me 3 days later for an interview, and I got the job (15 years later, I was laid off).

So disregard the experience requirement, it's not like they'll break your knee caps for not having any. Try to speak to someone in person. Be personable, (for me that is often a challenge ;) ), confident in your abilities (but not ####y or headstrong), and let them know that taking a chance with you will pay off.

It's easy for someone in charge of hiring to disregard a piece of paper or online applicant that may not have the perfect qualifications, but making a good impression in person can go a long way.

And since your employer is going to be local, actually showing up at the employer's office is going to be much easier. I'd suggest showing up with a resume and mailing one. Even if they hand you an application to fill out and return, make sure they get a well written resume that highlights your abilities and past life experiences.

As it was said above, sell yourself.

That is the crap that has caused a lot of frustration for new drivers.... CDL schools....

as stated, they do not actually place you in a job... they just make claims that with your new CDL you have ooodles of opportunities...

the other thing... the requirements to get into a CDL School and even get your CDL are lower than the requirements for most CDL jobs.... someone with DUIs and speeding tickes of over 10 mph over... get into school, get their CDL and then cant get hired on....

also... the schools don't tell you that you must get on somewhere within 3 months or your CDL is close to useless...
We have had new CDL holders graduate from school and have a dirty MVR.. by the time their MVR is clean enough to be hired... the issue becomes too much time passing from graduation and now they need a refresher course...

which.. refresher courses are a joke.. most schools dont offer them..

anyway... do your foot work like stated... ask the school for whatever help the do and can offer... list of companies...
but dont limit it to that... do your own research...

and even if they say they want experience go talk to them... they may hire you anyway... or they may also give you a couple places for you to check out...

    good luck to you..
