Just found this thread from a search... I thought I'd resurrect it to ask you experienced guys about the pros and cons of driving a mixer.
What's the worst thing about the job?
Is it usually long hour and lots of OT in summer and laid off winters?
There are a couple local spots advertising that I'm thinking about putting in for. It would mean a burnt bridge at my current job. Going rate around here for mixer drivers seems to be around $16/hr. I'm a little worried about being the new guy going into what could be an economic downturn, but it beats keeping on doing what I'm doing.
Advice appreciated.

There are definitely some long hours during the summer, but any company worth working for won't just lay you off come winter. We have a 40 hour guarantee, so as long as I'm available for work every day, I get 40 hours' pay.
The worse part about the job: a-hole dispatchers, hot afternoon curb jobs, and contractors who act like they didn't know you required a place to wash out.
Best part: It's not really physically demanding, the worse part is washing down. I love it because I'm third generation driving one, so for me it's a pride thing. Also, there's a camaraderie among mixer drivers; almost like that among firefighters and LEO's. No matter who you drive for, I won't hesitate to help you out of a bind.Greasethumb Thanks this. -
Thanks, fireman. Those negatives don't sound too bad at all.

No problem. Feel free to post here or PM me if you have any other questions!

Have a semi related question. Is it normal for cement trucks to wash out into curbside storm sewer drains? -
Not at all. It's against the law.

I thought it might be a common thing or something.... Judging by all of it I've removed from them. Was gonna say knock that crap off!.... Haha -
Or a contractor that runs you out of water before you wash out
