If you need company paid school I think con-way is probably your best bet..

StarboyJim, they did quit giving awards for non experienced driver referrals. Dreamboat, I had Conway pay for my school, I just got my truck two weeks ago.

To this point, everything that was promised to me by Conway has happened.

2000-3000 miles a week, Im at 2200 miles average per week

Professional Environment, spot on. Drivers bend over backwards to help you out, if they even think you are struggling they will walk over and ask if there is anything they can do.

You have a problem or question, it gets answered.

The equipment is well kept and in good shape.

I have had my truck in the shop and even the mechanics are willing to talk with you about your truck and take the time to teach you what you don't know.

Its a great Company. Im glad to be here.

My Mom is 60, and also went through the program with me. She got in a truck with a finisher and they didn't get along. Conway got her out of the truck, paid for a hotel room and the next morning a taxi was waiting to take her to the bus station and get her back to Joplin to pick up with another finisher. When she got back, we found out she had a medical issue to take care of, Conway gave a her a bus ticket home and said, if you can make it back within 9 months to finish training you will still be meeting the requirements of your contract. If it is going to be longer give us a call and we will see what we can work out. It really doesn't get any better than that.

Three things I would recommend, Go to school at Crowder College. If you want details why PM me and Ill explain. Second, after school take your 7 days off and go home. If you don't use them after school you lose them. Third, get all of your endorsements before you go to school. It can only benefit you and if you show up without them you are going to take them in Missouri anyway!

Thank you so much for the information! If everything goes as planned, I will be in Joplin on Thursday. Worst case should be the following Thursday. I do plan on Crowder and believe that's where they were planning on sending me, but I will double check with Keturah (recruiter) tomorrow.

I was planning on driving my own car there. It's about 17 hours. Let me know if that's a bad idea. As far as coming home for 7 days, I live alone. There really wouldn't be much benefit. Are they going to pay me for that 7 days off? If so, I'll certainly take the 7 days.

I've also been wanting to ask whoever might want to answer, whether it is a good idea to plan on unloading my current apartment. Of course, I would not do that until after I am certain the trucking is for me. Say 6 months to a year.

I would drive my car there as well. I left my car at home and regretted it. One because I don't like riding buses at all, and two, for the convenience of transportation while in school. Once you are at Conway there is a shuttle which is very convenient and free. The only concern you will have is how to get your car back home once you are issued a truck. But if you are ok with leaving it in Joplin there is a very secure lot that many drivers leave there cars in for what must be months at a time.

The 7 days off are unpaid, but the training is pretty stressful and so is the time with your finisher. (myself and most of my friends wound up doing 10,000 miles or more with our finishers) So you may want to consider taking at least a few days off, but that of course is up to you.

In my Moms case I encouraged her to get rid of her place. She wants to retire to another state so there was no need to maintain that overhead while she was on the road. You are the only one who can determine that based on what your personal goals/plans are. If you have a limited amount of belongings, have somewhere to store your things, or aren't opposed to selling it all, I would say free yourself of the apartment and put that monthly expense in the bank!

Let me know if theres anything else I can help you with, I will be in Joplin for at least a few more days.

Good luck to you, and stay patient!

Thank you so much. I love this forum.

What kind of money will I need? Do I need to worry at all about meals or hotels or anything? What about between school and the orientation? Will they have a place for me to sleep, or do I need to worry about that myself? Also meals during that time period?

So, what you're saying is, that I'll be getting a truck right away, so I will be needing all of those things that I planned to use in my truck. Such as tools, cooking equipment, etc.?

When you are in school your meals are paid for, three a day. Where I went to school we ate at a truck stop, since your going to be at a college it may be different. You will need money to tip if you eat out like we did, (I budgeted $3.00 a day tip for 30 days) We also had our meals paid for on the weekends.

When you leave school you will get a bus to Conway, they will pay for your room, be prepared you may have a roommate. The same thing at school, be prepared to have a roommate. When you get to Joplin you will stay in the LaQuinta, which is very nice with great staff and has a great breakfast, and a nice clean indoor and outdoor pool. There is a bus/shuttle in Conway colors that will take you back and forth. During orientation you will have lunch paid for at Conway, orientation is a week. After orientation you will be assigned a Finisher, you will not know when they are coming to get you until you call them or vice versa, you will have your room paid for but you will be responsible for your lunch and dinner. Also, you get paid during orientation. Cash in hand, $25.00 a day.

I forgot to mention, you will need to eat while you are out with your finisher. There will be no room in the truck for you typically other than a bunk, so be prepared to eat out. My 10,000 miles took 26 days.

Once you get your truck you can highlight to be routed home, and than you can outfit your truck with anything you need, that you have at home, or you can buy whatever you need on the road.

I was worried about "outfitting" my truck too, its easy to accomplish, don't spend to much time thinking on it, its literally one of your smallest concerns. I have a leatherman, a knife and a flashlight. Ive barely needed those.
