I forget the part #, but Cat makes a diaphragm kit for the diverter valve, the whole valve is about $700 if I remember right. You can buy the diaphragm kit for less than $50. Only buy the whole valve is yours is corroded or cracked.

I wonder if while your truck was down for 43 days if the body repair shop employees were in a hurry to build air pressure and revved up your previously reliable engine without any thought to properly warming it up. Sadly they may have thought they were just goofing around but in reality they might of cost you twenty grand.

I made my delivery in NH,.. went to park the truck for the night. Truck would not start back up. Starter woundnt turn over. I was thinking great,.. now a starter too.
Now I wish it was a starter.
Seems the reason it wouldnt turn over was because the engine was hyrdolocked.
I towed the truck down to Lowell Mass to a shop with certified CAT mechanics. Going to have the engine rebuilt there. Head went into the machine shop yesterday. They said they would let me know how coolant got into the cylinders. Trying to determine if this is the fault of the shop that replaced my waterpump or if this was something thats been in the works for a long time now due to the age and mileage.
I'll post up more info as I get it. Back home in Fla for now.

Hurst, sorry to here about all the trouble your having. Hope it all works out for you. In the meantime enjoy your home time.

I can tell you exactly what happened.
When they drained the coolant to do a good ol'e water pump job, they didn't use a vacuum coolant refiller. The coolant system by nature has pockets of air created when filled the old fashion way. For this CAT and other EGR engines with EGR cooler, you must use the coolant system filler. Other wise, the precooler will crack and fail as it did in your case.

But his engine doesn't have EGR, so there goes that theory. I had the same engine in my last truck as Hurst has, changed the thermostats in it myself, refilled the old fashioned way, no problems. Cat rebuilt that engine some years later, refilled the coolant the old fashioned way, no problems.

either it is just dumb luck and your head gasket failed or they screwed up some how when they did your waterpump. (running it without coolant) if the precooler failed dramatically that could of hydro locked it. but very doubtful. you will have a lot of coolant throughout the cac and tubing for that to happen. and I do mean a lot!

Alrighty,. some up dates for you guys.
Diagnoses is blown head gasket.
block, crank, rods, pistons, rings all good. Oil cooler good,.. pre cooler good.

Hurst,i know that hindsight is allways 20/20 but if you look at what your truck had cost in the last time,do you think it would have been better just buying a brand new one?
