But there is a huge difference in 5000 watts and running a 1K linear. Huge amp draw with a 1K linear. It may require up to 120 + amps to run just the linear much less the radio and the rest of the electronics in the vehicle.

Sound systems with big subs and 5000 watt amp has 250 amp fuses so it's pulling way more then 120 amps

And if we are talking about a OTR truck which normally has 4 battery's totaling 4000 CCA a 120 or even 200 amp draw, wouldn't even make that system flinch.

My m925a2 has the military hams in it and those radios are pulling up to 250-300 amps on 4 group 31 battery's at 24 volts

You will not fry anything IF...you ground the snot out the amp using heavy gauge wire, run good high qualitly low loss coax rather than the cheap CB shop/Truck stop stuff, ground the snot out of the antenna plus use a quality antenna and tune the radio to be clean rather than a distorted harmonic swinging splatter box. I've run more than 1K and I've known drivers who ran more than 5K in trucks( knew one guy in a KW who used a 32 pill) and never gave the trucks electronics a single problem. But I/they took the time to do the install right, not quick, fast and cheap. Using big power is not a plug and play kinda deal and the only time people have problems is when they go cheap and don't ground everthing as it should be.

To tell you the truth, I know the work that comes out of the CB shop in Memphis and I wouldn't let them change a wheel on my little red wagon!

My advice to you is to put the 98 on the shelf, it's too big to be used as a driver unless you want to steep up to really big amps but then you will need to add more batterys and the alt will need to be upgraded to handle it. Have a Cobra 29 or 148 built to be clean ( no siwng kits!) along with whatever toys you want, buy a quality 1x4 amp (I like 1- 2290 driving 4- 2879's) wire it correctly with big wire, run the best coax and antenna you afford and overkill ground everything ( radio-amp and antenna) then talk to your hearts content. The only thing that will get hot are those who you blow off the air waves ;-)

Just military grade radios that they use. They were in the truck when I bought it. It also has a coms system on it to talk to the guys in the back

There is more than one shop in Memphis/W.Memphis. To be fair you should indicate which one you are referring to.

It happens, but I always had good luck with Volvo and It never happened to me. Must have a good technician with a big power supply on his bench that understands how to tune a radio and amplifier

It might be true If you are amplifying harmonics. If it's set up correctly it shouldn't be a problem. The only problem is 99 out of 100 radio technicians are completely clueless when it comes to amplification.

Harmonics would not effect it, there has to be more of an rf surge or power surge to do damage to the ECM. 1 kW? Hardly.
