Retired/ non-commercial truck questions

    I sometimes see big trucks pulling large 5th wheel campers. I'm thinking that some folks in the RV community would be better able to answer your questions than us commercial drivers. I'm sure there are many good web forums for RVers.

    Just a thought. Good luck in finding your new big toy.

    This subject has been gone over extensively a couple of years back. First off it's very important to make sure the FMCSR'S has classified the truck as non-commercial. It doesn't matter what the insurance companies say because they do not enforce the laws. I'm sure your insurance company would cover the vehicle once you have a non-commercial plate for the truck. Here's the debate that went on with many LEO's and Drivers. A truck that is non-commercial can not generate any income. Believe it or not a trophy can disqualify you so the line to cross can get lengthy and be a mix-up. What one person says is income is not to another. It would be best to go to a truck show that has the custom trucks and they can tell you what to do for every state you might want to travel through.

    Of course you have to be looking at buying a truck to know what to do. I suggest just go to a truck dealer. There are many around and you can search on-line to find one near you and what you need. You might have to call them but they can tell you better than anyone.

    Thank you both for the advise. Good point about RV hauling, never thought about that. And I know I need collector/classic plates (not commercial) and that I cannot use the truck at all for any type of income. Good idea to contact some local truck sellers. Forgive my ignorance as I just got my CDL and I still have a LOT to learn.

    Oh boy ... First off stop trying to be cheap. You should not look at haggerty for the insurance. I dealt with them in an accident and their coverage was limited despite their claim of being a good company, you need to read the policy carefully.

    Second just get a truck ... Any year will do. Register it as an rv when you transfer the title. However you may need to put in a toilet or sink in the sleeper, but it is doable, every state will have different requirements.

    Don't worry about dot numbers or anything like that. You will get pulled over, and no matter what the guy/gal says, it is an rv unless you are hauling for money. Even if you have a 53 foot trailer behind it, it still is an rv.

    I own a truck that is now an rv, it has a new flat bed on the back of it and we've used it to move some antique cars last week. I got pulled over three times by michigan and ohio cops, and argued with one of them about it but then never got a ticket so if I do, I will just go to court and get it dismissed, I have a friend who took a 1979 kW and made it into an rv, hauling his 20 foot camper with it, he's been pulled over a lot of times.

    I have Hagerty for some of my other vehicles and they are good (so far). I'll look into my regular insurance company to see what they can do for RVs. Thank you for the suggestion, I appreciate it!
