And don't be late. They have to have all the trucks in from various points on the dock by 04:00 to load out the locals by 08:30 departure. You late? a lot of people get unhappy when their freight doesn't arrive the day it was supposed to.
Line haul is for the dependable types who don't screw around and don't look for excuses to nap, or stop here and there to chat with this waitress and that waitress.

 

this is correct, if one has next day delivery and you are late getting to either terminal the customers get freebies, and you get yelled at.

Exactly right. At the LTL barn I used to work at they hired a road driver for linehaul. His first night out comin back to St Louis from Memphis he took a nap, took his time, got some coffee a few times. Rolled in about 2 hours after his projected “gate” time with Guaranteed Next Day freight. It did NOT go well for him when he got back. In his defense though, he didn’t know. Nobody told him how LTL worked he just thought “here’s 2 trailers, I’ll get there when I get there.” If you’re on a schedule we had what Estes called a “cut” time. When they want your bills in hand. Dispatch types in what time your bills got printed. You then have like 30 minutes to build your set, and roll. They have your estimated time to your destination terminal. Then same thing on the other end. And I mean they’re not gonna shoot you if you’re 10, 15 maybe 20 minutes late or whatever. But you start talkin hours and that’s when things get dicey. It’s a bit more lax if you’re on extraboard and moving over flow freight and not a scheduled run.

 

Plus, they're almost 3 years late to the party.
