90% of repairs due solely to DEF system and sensors?

Are you seeing this in your company? I was talking to a friend(Terminal MGR) at MLS and we somehow started talking about DEF, he then said in June, 90+% of his terminal repairs were DEF system related, mostly the sensors and sensors for the sensors...Anyone else seeing this in their shops or personal trucks?...

if it isn't that then it's the extra wiring needed for that junk.

We have Penske lease trucks, freightshakers. We have had 2 trucks now that have had to have the entire system removed and cleaned, especially the tanks. Even when this is done, about a 2 month period goes by and it starts all over again. The repairs are done at a dealer and by golly, when Penske drops off a truck to them, we hardly ever get it back, till about 1 full month later.

Yep, I drive a 2015 FL Cascadia. 56572 miles right now. I've been lucky compared to some people's experiences. Mines only been broke down 4 times for a total of about a week and a half downtime.

That's been my experience with 3 crapcadias and 2 volvos under my belt. one needed the filter and whole system cleaned after a derate at 80k. One dosing nozzle at 115k due to bad sensor screwing it up the rest were sensor or electrical garbage related to the system between 80-150k.

Only one other mechanical issue between the 5 that wasn't def related.

In a brand new kw now so see how this goes

It depends honestly. With Lessors I have had very little issue with the DPF. With GTI it was an ongoing problem. It's the way the trucks are set up. The DPF technology has been improving dramatically over the last few years.

Our first generation trucks with DPF/DEF systems (2011 Volvos) were troubleprone. In fact my old truck was constantly having a fault code for a plugged EGR cooler. I was never able to maintain more than 6.8 mpg even when empty or light which leads me to believe it was burning more fuel than needed, making extra soot.

I also had DPF/SCR issues with that truck.

The 2014+ trucks we have don't seem to be plagued with nearly as many issues related to emissions.

    joseph1135 Thanks this.

We have about 20 leased from a National lease affiliate.
Not had that many issues with DEF. All Freightliner Cascadias, no Volvo, or Paccar. The shop fills the DEF for us for the most part, and I'm very careful when I put some in on my own and have always used the pumps when I did, no jugs. I read the service bulletins, contamination is the biggest problem, sometimes caused by operator error.

I think we have had 2 2012s with the DEF pump being replaced.

257k and mine has never been towed except for a radiator being destroyed when I encountered a deer in unusual conditions(very crunchy new snow had it distracted and you wouldn't believe how far one can leap horizontally). Mine is a 2013 built in June of 2012. Shop time is often due to parts having to be brought in,but the lease trucks get priority(guess who owns the dealers?)

    We idle as needed.

It's all about maintenance just like everything else. I hear people say that APUs are a waste of money because they break down constantly. That the DPF are junk and cause a b c problems. It all comes down to have these things are being taken care of.
