Well last week I said that I got offered a dock job at Yellow Freight, which would be part time. Hopefully leading to a driving position after several months. I only have the drug screening and physical to pass which wont be a problem and I could be starting late this week or beginning of next.
So now just yesterday I got a call from Sygma offering me a job as a Yard Jockey starting at $17hr, with 3 raises in one year to put it at $20hr. Its full time hours, 10hr days Mon-Thurs with Fri,Sat and Sun off. This job right away starts giving me experience driving in the yard, backing and I would be a backup driver in emergencys. Also after a while doing this I can move right into a full time driving job making $55-$65 a year.
So what do you guys think?? Im thinking the Yard Jockey sounds pretty good, with a good wage and hours, and its full time.
The problem with Yellow is its part time doing dock work, no guarantee of hours or when I could move into a driving job. Plus being Union Im the 1st to go in a layoff.
Let me know what you all think.
Yellow, and now also Sygma.

There is only one real choice here as I see it.
I think you already know which one it is.
Full time with a 3 day weekend every week.............. whats not to love?kilroy2963 Thanks this. -
I would go with Sygma good hours, good money, hey never know could lead to a full time driving job down the road. Good luck.
-
Yes....Sygma all the way
-
Thanks!! Well that's my thinking also, 3 days off and good pay, and full time, cant beat that. I will hate to drop the bomb on Yellow, but I have to do whats good for me. I just hope it doesn't kill my chances if I wanted to work for Yellow in the future.
-
Sygma would be my first choice. People always have to eat
Not many lay offs there. Lots of driver unload though.
Yellow, good job that can only get better as long as the economy holds. And they don't start laying off new hires. Benefits may be better also. -
if you get on the dock at yellow you will be on the local cartage board - you can then move to the util position
m-f 25+ an hour time and a half after 8 hours - bonus - 401k - pension and all your insurance paid 100%...
think long term - not quick buck now. your back will think you in 10 years...
(in a few years you will be making a lot more than the sygma guy - and you will not be worn out when you get home) -
So from the dock position, how long does it usually take to go full time?? Problem is it will be very difficult to make it on part time hours unless I can get another job during that time.
-
being a casual does not always mean part time...
we have casuals working 50 hours a week...
usually after we try you on for size you will be offered a perm. position...
they use the casual label to weed out idiots and slackers.
-
Sygma is better than a casual position.. I had that once with consolidated freight back in the 80's. Not only did it suck, but they treated you like dirt, and sent you home a lot....
