So maybe Taiwan on my way to Shanghai. I'm planning on being in Shanghai for my birthday on the 29th of Feb since I only get that day once every four years.

Flight 1: Sun. Feb. 21, Wichita, KS (ICT) to Taipei, Taiwan (TPE)
Flight 2: Fri. Feb. 26, Taipei, Taiwan (TPE) to Shanghai, China (SHA)
Flight 3: Thu. Mar. 3, Shanghai, China (SHA) to Wichita, KS (ICT)

Will run me about $1300 in airfare (only $300 more than my round trip Shanghai) not bad at all.

Many of us do it. Several that post on here do it. Many drivers own homes overseas. It's easy to do if you watch your spending and get those endorsements that add pay to your checks. Right now I'm posting from Beijing in my condo that I've owned for over 10 years.

I drive part time and work in Unexploded Ordnance/mine clearance when not driving. So I travel and make money then come home and drive regional. Money doesn't stop. Having a company that allows that flexibility is a good thing. Posting from South Korea now.

I spent several years as a teen in Europe travailing.....good times for sure.
to answer your question, you will have to get a new med card at a new job. your cdl will be fine as long as it doesn't expire while your over there.
you will just have a long gap in employment.
when this happens you will have a hard time with SOME NOT ALL companies getting a job.
Not really to hard if you apply at other places.
    you should be fine.

    MAN UP AND HEAD OUT!
You got beer with your name in Germany calling your name!

With the new law in Oregon for medical cards, I will have to assume they are doing this now, downgrading it. I forgot about this.

the "new law" was started I think in January of 2014. it's how to get back your CDL if it is down graded. like for instance, my state follows the DOT by allowing one to just go and get another medical card. some states, (as mentioned in another thread) make a driver go thru all the testing all over again, this means written AND road test.>!!!!!

Currently putting money aside for the Olympics in Brazil next year. Other than that I've done a couple days in Mexico and cruises to the Bahamas, since driving. Europe and Thailand are definitely on the radar and in the budget, It'll happen eventually.

I think it's extremely healthy to get out of the truck for a good period of time. I've met quite a few drivers who only work 6-8 months out of the year then fly to wherever they have homes at for a few months. Seems like the Philippines are really popular

I told my boss a week ago that I will be taking 3 months next year (spring) to learn to sail solo and head towards the gulf.

He laughed and said......go for it. The truck will be here when you get back.

I am currently reworking some of the rigging, and installing a GPS system. I have been buying charts that overlap for my route. It's only a 26' Islander sailboat, but it has great cabin space and is a nice little coastal cruiser.
