It's not bad running, Slant. My personal preference is to run 50 over from Emporia then 56, and drop south over in the Panhandle somewhere. Dates from the days before they upgraded 54 with the passing lanes, got tired of being stuck behind slow freight wagons, and avoids the charlie foxtrot of 54 in Oklahoma with all the pork plants and their traffic. Just had to remember the bridge at Dalhart is only 13'6", and most of the FM roads over there are weight limited at one point or another.

You can run 56 all the way over to 25 but that's a lonely stretch of road that was rough and narrow last time I was on it.

I live out here and I hate it. I avoid 54/400 any chance I can. We run down to New Mexico a lot and I will not go that way. It's faster going south past Greensburg. Way too much traffic for a two lane. As busy as it is, I don't understand why KDOT doesn't make it four lane all across the state.

We run it all the time, some days are good, some days you get behind a CRE truck. It really is the shortest route though, one other thing, instead of running over to Wichita you could turn on 61 north all new 4 lane after Hutch and it dumps you out on I 135 2 miles south of Mcpherson, then take exit 60and go east on 56 to 150 and pick up 50 by strong city, that will roll you right into the FJ at Emporia, BUT,right now exit 60 of I135 nb is still closed!!!

Back in AZ Sunday afternoon. 1700 miles door to door. US 54 out of Wichita to Tucumcari not so bad. Bumpy though. Had a stupid CRST driver pull out in front of me from a turnout as I was doing 75, but otherwise uneventful. Would have liked to pull him out of the truck and Bi tch Slap him.
