Anybody ever replaced a fender on a Volvo. I'm looking at replacing my left fender thanks to USX. I was going to just get a used hood and be done with it. 4 States Trucks is only about 100 miles from me and their web site said they had 8. But when I called them they said they have none. Their price is $1775. I can get a new fender from Volvo for $1135. So with some work I can save some money.
But how to do the work? Body shop guy said they can be separated with heat. He uses a propane torch. Do you need just one torch? Are two with a second person on the other side? Do you need a third person to wedge them apart?
Then when you reassemble how do you hold the two parts in place while the glue sets up? I'm thinking make a wood jig to hold the two parts in place up side down then weights (Probably cement blocks) to press it together. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Last year I replaced the hood mount on the right side. It's still holding well. You can search "hood mount repair" to see that post.
If I don't find a used hood (I'm still looking) I'll put post on hear of how I did the job since there don't seem to be any. Or is there a more appropriate form on here for body work?

I'll admit I've only ever worked on 2 Volvos but it sounds like you've got a plan figured out. If you've got the space could you fit a bunch of C-clamps or something similar along the joint to hold the seam

now the real question is if USX did this as you say they did why are YOU fixing it and not having them pay a body shop to do it......???
when Schneider ripped up my hood I didn't do the repairs I made Schneider pay for it and motel and down time -
They might make special clamps to do the job. It would take some very deep jawed clamps to fit them on there. I might just let the body shop replace the fender and I do everything else. That would still leave me a pretty good chunk of change for my pocket.

That's simple. USX is sending me a check. I can then give it to a body shop and they will do a great job. Truck fixing to turn a Million miles. It's coming to the end of it's life. It don't need it to look prefect. I can do the work myself and it might not turn out as good, but I'll put 6 to 7 grand in my pocket. USX will cut the check for the repair and down time according to the body shop estaminet. How I fix it or even if I fix it is up to me. It's all about the money
baha Thanks this.
