Anybody know what the commission split is for independent agents at LandStar? I'm ready to make a decision on which agency to hook up with.
Smaller agencies often have more attractive compensation packages, sometimes as high as 80% of net for the agent. But the downside can sometimes be that nobody's heard of them. By the same token, a known agency like Landstar will have both advocates and, unfortunately, critics who didn't like the way a specific deal (or deals) went down.
My thinking is that what you might lose in smaller commission splits at Landstar--you might make up in volume, greater back office support, name prestige, etc.
On the other hand, I know a small agency broker who has good credit, a great reputation; we clicked comfortably in our phone conversation and he would likely make a great mentor
Anybody out there with Landstar experience from the broker/agent side?

Why don't you just go with the one you feel is a great mentor. The blue star is just.........a blue star. Lots and lots of freight moves in this country with zero affiliation to it. I'd go with who I felt comfortable with and not get fixated on corporate size.

But, my natural cautiousness suggests I should at least compare the two to make the most informed choice.
That's reasonable, don't you think? -
I don't think it's an impulse you're feeling..........it's your gut telling you what's right.
Surely reasonable...........just don't get "star-struck".RB Cunningham and scottlav46 Thank this. -
Dang near the best advice I've seen out here. Nicely done.

good credit and a great reputation DING DING we have a winner, there are lots of places that have good credit but less than sterling reputations cough-tql-cough so I side with the listen to your gut it is trying to steer you in the right direction

quick disclaimer I had a bad experience with the blue star and will never engage in business with them again
KenworthGuyNH, rank and RB Cunningham Thank this. -
Never worked for Lanstar or a large firm that would be comparable in size, but I do know several who work for them and CHRobinson and from what I hear the smaller brokerages are much more pleasant environment to work in. They basically tell me that each agent is treated like a number on a spreadsheet and although they have more tools and resources to pull from, each agent is left out to dry if they have a slow month or some kind of "hiccup" that would result in lost dollars. Not a whole lot of help being offered in those places.
I work for a small firm and essentially run my own portion of their business without much guidance or hassel, but if I need help with anything I have all the resources I need and I have several people (all of which I know personally) willing to help me out with credit issues, insurance, and even just finding a truck to recover a dropped load. I've never experienced the way Landstar and CHRobinson do things firsthand, but from what I hear you'll probably be more comfortable with the smaller brokerage you already know with people you already seem to work well with.ipogsd and RB Cunningham Thank this. -
